Terry’s Gem Lifts UCLA Past Nebraska into Big Ten Tournament Title Game

May 09, 2025 | Softball

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Sophomore pitcher Kaitlyn Terry struck out 13 batters in a complete-game effort to lead the No. 2-seeded UCLA softball team to a 4-2 victory over No. 3-seed Nebraska in the Big Ten Tournament Semifinals at Bittinger Stadium Friday afternoon.

The Bruins (49-9) advance to tomorrow's Big Ten Tournament Championship where they will face No. 8 seed Michigan at 1 p.m. (PT) to cap their first year in the league. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.

Terry improved her record to 17-4 and pitched her ninth complete game of the season in today's dominant effort. She came one strikeout shy of tying her single-game career high set earlier this year versus Missouri on Feb. 20. Terry's 13 punchouts marked the fourth double-digit strikeout performance of her career and her first against a conference opponent. She struck out newly-minted 2025 Big Ten Player of the Year Jordyn Bahl in all three of her plate appearances today.

Offensively, UCLA totaled nine base hits and two home runs off Huskers (39-13) starter Bahl. Senior Savannah Pola notched her fifth three-hit game of the season, going 3-for-4 off Bahl. Freshmen Sofia Mujica and Kaniya Bragg each provided key home runs in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively. Mujica also threw out a runner attempting to steal from behind the dish to close out the top of the first inning.

Similar to the quarterfinal round versus Indiana on Thursday, junior Jordan Woolery gave the Bruins an early lead with a loud extra-base hit in the bottom half of the opening frame. Pola reached as UCLA's first baserunner of the game on a comebacker to Bahl. Two pitches later, Woolery shot a liner into right-center field that rolled all the way to the wall allowing Pola to score easily from first base.

Terry surrendered two runs, five hits and two walks in her 121-pitch outing (80 strikes). She recorded two or more strikeouts in six of her seven innings. Terry faced her first trouble of the night in the top of the second when Hannah Camenzind singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch with only one out. Terry proceeded to strikeout the next two batters, Abbie Squier and Bella Bacon, on just seven pitches.

Terry worked off UCLA's one-run lead through the first four innings, keeping the Nebraska bats at bay. The Huskers did not have a runner reach scoring position in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings.

In the bottom half of the fourth, Terry's batterymate Mujica gave a major assist with a two-run homer to left-center field to pad the Bruins' lead to 3-0. Mujica's blast – her seventh of the year – marked her first hit against a conference foe in 13 games.

Nebraska mustered its first runs of the game in the top of the sixth. Facing the heart of the order, Terry allowed back-to-back singles with one out to No. 2 and 3 hitters Samantha Bland and Ava Kuszak. Terry punched out the next hitter Oliva DiNardo looking for a second out, inching closer to escaping the jam. Hannah Camenzind skied a fly ball to right field that was lost in the sunlight by Liesl Osteen and bounced off the wall for a bases-clearing, two-RBI triple. Terry was tasked with keeping UCLA's 3-2 lead intact with the game-tying run on third base and two away. Woolery snagged a sharply-hit ball by Squier down the third base line and bolted a throw over to first base for the final out.

Bragg gave one run of support back to Terry immediately, leading off the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer into the left field corner.

Terry closed out the ballgame with ease, punctuating a three-up, three-down inning with her 13th strikeout of the night.
