THE MATCHUP
The UCLA football team plays its first road contest of the 2025 season this week against UNLV at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev. on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 5 p.m. (PT). The third-ever meeting between the Bruins (0-1, 0-0 Big Ten) and Rebels (2-0, 0-0 Mountain West) will be televised on the CBS Sports Network. Fans in the greater Los Angeles region can listen live on AM 790, the new home of the UCLA Bruins Audio Network.

UCLA and UNLV are meeting for the first time since the 2016 season. In that Week 2 matchup, sophomore quarterback Josh Rosen threw for 267 yards and sophomore tailback Soso Jamabo rushed for three touchdowns in a 42-21 Bruins' win at the Rose Bowl. The Bruins totaled 219 yards on the ground. Jamabo registered 90 yards on 11 carries, as all three of his touchdown runs came in the first half. Brandon Stephens finished with 71 yards on 11 attempts.

UCLA lost to Utah, 43-10, in its season opener at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. last Saturday night. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Nico Iamaleava wrapped his Bruin debut completing 11 of 22 pass attempts for 136 passing yards and one touchdown. The Long Beach, Calif. native also led UCLA's rushing efforts with 47 yards on the ground in 13 attempts. Redshirt junior Anthony Woods was Iamaleava's top target, finishing with 48 receiving yards and UCLA's lone touchdown. The Bruins totaled 210 yards of offense against Utah, as the Utes finished the contest with 492 total yards (286 rushing, 206 passing) and scored on seven drives.

KEY NOTES ON UCLA
โข Linebackers Isaiah Chisom (5-12-17) and JonJon Vaughns (6-9-15) finished with double-digit tackles in UCLA's season-opening loss to Utah on Aug. 30. UCLA had multiple double-digit tacklers in one game in 2024 (Carson Schwesinger, 15; Oluwafemi Oladejo, 10 at Penn State).
โข Chisom's 17 tackles in his UCLA debut against Utah bested his previous career high by six. The 17 tackles are tied with Carson Schwesinger (at Washington, 2024) and Jayon Brown (vs. Colorado, 2016) for the most by a Bruin over the last 10 seasons. Vaughns' 15-tackle performance against Utah more than doubled his previous career high of seven set against Colorado in 2022.

โข The Bruins' offseason was highlighted by the transfer portal addition of redshirt sophomore quarterback Nico Iamaleava who spent the previous two seasons at Tennessee. The Long Beach, Calif. native returns home after leading the Volunteers to an 11-3 record as the starting quarterback and a College Football Playoff (CFP) appearance in 2024. Iamaleava finished last season completing 213-of-334 passes (63.8%) for 2,616 yards (201.2 yards per game) and 19 touchdowns with five interceptions. He totaled 299-plus yards of total offense in three contests against UT-Chattanooga (320), Kentucky (306) and Vanderbilt (299). Iamaleava ranked second in the Southeastern Conference with six 50-plus-yard completions last season.
โข QB Nico Iamaleava was tabbed to five preseason watch lists in anticipation of his first game as a Bruin: Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Player of the Year, Davey O'Brien Quarterback of the Year, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and Polynesian Player of the Year.
โข Eight new assistants joined Coach Foster's second-year staff. Among those newcomers was offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Tino Sunseri who arrives at UCLA after helping Indiana to 11 wins for the first time in program history, a CFP appearance and the nation's second-ranked scoring offense (41.3 points per game) in his role as co-offensive coordinator. The Hoosiers also finished second in FBS with a 174.03 passing efficiency with Sunseri on the offensive staff.
โข In a season of firsts, UCLA went 5-7 overall with a 3-6 conference record in DeShaun Foster's debut as head coach of his alma mater in 2024. The Bruins, who were playing their first season in the coast-to-coast Big Ten Conference, were spurred by a three-game winning streak that featured road conference wins over Rutgers (35-32) and Nebraska (27-20) and a dominant home victory over Iowa. UCLA concluded the season on a high note by winning four of its last six games.
