No. 9 Softball Closes Perfect Weekend with 15-7 Win over Texas A&M
February 22, 2026 | Softball
The Bruins (13-3) ousted three top-25 programs over the last three days with two other wins over No. 20 Duke and No. 13 South Carolina.
UCLA gave associate head coach Lisa Fernandez, the Bruins' hitting coach, the best possible birthday present with 11 base knocks, four home runs and two doubles off three Aggie (10-6) arms. Jordan Woolery and Kaniya Bragg each hit grand slams while Ramsey Suarez and Alexis Ramirez also left the yard.
Grant reached base in all four of her plate appearances with an RBI base hit, two walks and a hit-by-pitch. She finished the weekend with a .545 batting average (6-for-11) with two homers, two doubles, an astounding nine walks and two hit-by-pitches. Grant's season stats are utterly ridiculous (just click here).
Rylee Slimp tied a UCLA single-game record with three hit-by-pitches that was originally set by Katie Schroeder in 2012.
The Aggies jumped out to an early lead with a five spot in the top of the second. UCLA starter Natalie Cable opened the inning by allowing a base hit through the left side of the infield and a four-pitch walk, prompting a pitching change for Taylor Tinsley. Tinsley was only able to record one out on a sacrifice bunt. She gave up two singles, beaned two batters and issued back-to-back bases loaded walks.
Cable was reinserted into the circle by The Shelly Carlin UCLA Head Softball Coach Kelly Inouye-Perez and recorded the final two outs of the inning on a 5-3 double play. Bruins third baseman Bri Alejandre tagged her base for the first out and threw across the diamond.
UCLA responded by putting up six runs in the bottom half of the second and another crooked number in the third with eight more runs. Sophomore outfielder Mia Phillips drove in the Bruins' first two runs on a double into the right-center gap. Texas A&M starting pitcher Sydney Lessentine drilled her next hitter, Slimp, with a pitch and walked Grant on four pitches to load the bases. Woolery emptied the pillows with her second grand slam of the weekend, third of the season and fifth of her career on a towering blast to left field to give UCLA its first lead at 6-5.
After a shutdown frame from Cable, the Bruins went back to work in the third with leadoff hitter Suarez reaching on a hard-hit ball that deflected off the Aggies' third baseman. One batter later, Ramirez hit an opposite field two-run shot to right field. The rally continued with Phillips logging another base hit and Slimp getting hit by another pitch. Grant dropped a single into right field to score Phillips from second. A Woolery hit-by-pitch to filled the bases with Bruins again. Bragg sent them all home with her first career grand slam to balloon the lead to 13-5.
Prior to Sunday, the last time UCLA hit two grand slams in the same game was against No. 21 Ohio State on April 21, 2025.
Suarez came around to hit a second time in the inning and tallied UCLA's third homer of the inning and her third of the weekend; the Temecula, Calif. native had only homered twice in her previous career 81 at-bats coming into the 2026 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Texas A&M scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to extend the life of the game. In the bottom half, however, UCLA cut the cord with a walk-off RBI single by Aleena Garcia. Garcia, who was last night's hero against South Carolina, skied a fly ball that landed between three Aggie defenders in shallow right field. Pinch runner Jaella Ann Mercado allowed for the walk-off opportunity thanks to her stolen base during Garcia's at-bat.
Cable (2-1) closed her 4.2-inning outing with three strikeouts, four earned runs and her first career win over a top-25 opponent.
