No. 1 UCLA Pulls Away Late to Defeat No. 12 USC in Series-Opener, 12-4
April 03, 2026 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES โ The No. 1-ranked UCLA baseball team used a late offensive surge to pull away from No. 12 USC, rolling to a 12-4 win in Friday night's series opener at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
ย
The Bruins (27-2, 13-0 Big Ten) extended their winning streak to 21 games, moving within one of the program record of 22 straight set to open the 2010 season.
ย
Tied 4-4 after six innings, UCLA grabbed the lead on Will Gasparino's RBI single in the seventh, then broke the game wide open with a seven-run eighth inning that put the rivalry matchup out of reach.
ย
UCLA also got to USC starter Mason Edwards, tagging the left-hander for a season-high three earned runs and knocking him out after 4.2 innings, his second-shortest outing of the year.
ย
Five Bruins turned in multi-hit performances. Payton Brennan and Gasparino led the way with three hits apiece, while Roman Martin homered for the fourth time this season as part of a two-hit night. Roch Cholowsky and Dominic Cadiz each added two hits to fuel the offense.
ย
On the mound, Logan Reddemann delivered 6.0 steady innings in his first no-decision of the year, allowing four earned runs on six hits while striking out five.
ย
UCLA struck first with a two-out rally in the opening frame. Mulivai Levu reached on a strikeout after an errant throw to first, and Martin followed with a walk. Brennan made the Trojans pay, shooting a base hit through the right side to put the Bruins on the board.
ย
USC answered in the second, as Andrew Lamb delivered a two-run homer to give his team the lead.
ย
Martin pulled UCLA even in the third, launching a solo shot over the left-field wall for his third home run in as many games.
ย
The Bruins reclaimed the lead in the fourth, pushing across two runs on three hits. Cadiz sparked the inning with a sharp leadoff single to left, and West cashed him in with a two-out double into the left-center gap. Cholowsky followed with an infield hit, and Levu drew a walk to load the bases. Martin then extended the margin, working a full count before taking ball four to force in another run and make it a two-run advantage.
ย
The Trojans scratched a run across in the fifth, but UCLA limited the damage by escaping a bases-loaded, no-out jam with just the single run allowed. The Bruins nearly turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning, but the runner narrowly beat the throw to first, allowing USC's only run of the frame to score.
ย
USC then tied the game in the sixth when Augie Lopez hit a solo home run.
ย
UCLA used another two-out rally to reclaim the lead in the seventh. Brennan ripped a double into the left-center gap, and Gasparino followed with a blooper that dropped in just before a diving USC right fielder could make the play, pushing the Bruins back in front.
ย
Zach Strickland helped protect the lead with 1.1 steady innings, striking out two along the way. When USC put a runner on in the eighth, UCLA turned to Easton Hawk, who quickly shut down the threat with a pop-up and a groundout to end the inning.
ย
The Bruins then blew the game open with a seven-run eruption in the eighth, sending 12 batters to the plate. Call and West reached to start the frame, and Cholowsky's infield single loaded the bases. Levu delivered the first big swing, shooting a two-run single through the drawn-in infield. Martin followed by scorching a ball off the pitcher, and Brennan added another heavy blow with a two-run single to right. UCLA tacked on three more runs on a Gasparino RBI single, a wild pitch, and an outfield error, capping a dominant inning that put the game out of reach.
ย
Hawk closed the door in the ninth, striking out two in a perfect frame to seal the win and his fourth save of the season.

UCLA returns to Jackie Robinson Stadium tomorrow at 2 p.m. for game two of the rivalry series, with live coverage available on B1G+.
