Junior pitcher Amanda Freed (Cypress, CA/Pacifica HS) of the UCLA Softball Team was selected as the UCLABruins.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Feb. 26-Mar. 4.
Freed, this week's Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week, faced the minimum number of batters in 12 IP during the week, pitching a five-inning one-hitter on Saturday against South Florida, and her first career seven-inning no-hitter against UNLV on Sunday.
In the South Florida game, Freed walked one and struck out seven, including all three batters in the third inning. Both baserunners in the game, a walk in the first inning and a hit in the fourth, were eliminated on double plays, allowing Freed to face the minimum number of batters. Against UNLV on Sunday, Freed again faced the minimum number of batters, striking out five and walking the leadoff batter in the fourth inning, the only blemish on an otherwise perfect game. That baserunner was caught stealing for the third out of the inning, again allowing Freed to only face the minimum number of batters in the seven-inning win.
It was the third career no-hitter for Freed, and the first since her freshman year when she had a five-inning no hitter against Santa Clara and a six-inning no-no against Missouri. It was the 75th no-hitter in UCLA softball history.
Her pitching line for the week was 0.00 ERA, 2-0, 2 App, 2 GS/2 CG, 2 SHO, 12.0 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 13 SO. Opp. BA vs. Freed: .029. Offensively, she hit .423, going 11-for-26 with four runs scored, two doubles, two triples, one home run and seven RBI. She had a .769 slugging percentage and was perfect defensively on eight chances while playing in all seven games for the top-ranked Bruins.
This is Freed's first student-athlete of the week honor of the season and the third of her career.
