Bruin Softball Holds Off Late Beaver Rally For 8-7 Win

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Steph Adams homered to cap a four-run Oregon State rally in the seventh inning to close in on UCLA, but the Bruins held on and came away with an 8-7 win over the Beavers in Pacific-10 softball action at Ropes-Fetrow Field on Sunday. With Stanford's 4-3 victory at Arizona on Sunday, that leaves UCLA as the lone undefeated team in Pac-10 play at 31-5 (6-0 Pac-10).

With the Beavers trailing 8-3 in the seventh, Brynnen Guthrie smacked a double into right centerfield to start things off for OSU (26-12-1, 0-6 Pac-10). Shelly Prochaska flew out to leftfield, but Tarrah Beyster walked to put runners on first and second.

Michelle Chariton pinch ran for Beyster, and Jenni Jodoin followed up with the second double of the inning to send Guthrie home. That brought up Adams, who sent her sixth home run of the year over the right field fence to bring the Beavers within a run of the No. 3 Bruins.

Crystal Draper kept things going with another walk, but Shannon Sorg became Amanda Freed's 21st strikeout victim of the weekend and pinch hitter Michelle Notaro grounded out to third base to end the game.

The Beavers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Shawna Feldt picked up a lead-off single, Guthrie reached on an error and Prochaska walked to load the bases. Tarrah Beyster then doubled to drive in the first two runs of the game. Jodoin walked to load the bases again, but Adams grounded into a fielder's choice that had Prochaska thrown out at home. The Beavers ended up leaving the bases loaded.

UCLA (31-5, 6-0) responded with a run of its own in the second after Julie Marshall led off with a double. She went to third on a ground ball and scored on a wild pitch, but the Bruins didn't take the lead until Lyndsey Klein hit a two-run home run in the third to give UCLA a 3-2 advantage.

Jodoin tied it up in the bottom of the third by capitalizing on an error by Klein, UCLA's second baseman. Jodoin singled to start the inning, went to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a fielder's choice. With one out and runners on first and third, Sorg popped up to second base for the second out. Klein tried for a double play, hoping to catch Traci Feldt, who had left for second when Sorg hit the ball. Klein overthrew the ball to first base, and Jodoin headed home to tie the game.

Amanda Freed, who helped her own cause by scoring three runs with 4-for-4 effort at the plate, took over the pitching duties for Stephanie Swenson after the first inning. Freed picked up her third win of the weekend to improve to 16-2 on the year. She gave up six hits and five runs with six strikeouts and five walks.

Beyster (16-8) took the loss for OSU after giving up five runs on six hits in 4.1 innings of work. She was replaced by Draper, who allowed six hits and three runs in 2.2 innings.
