Steve Klosterman had 15 kills and 3 blocks to lead the No. 3-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team to a 30-25, 30-20, 30-24 win over unranked USC in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Thursday (Jan. 29) in USC's North Gym.
UCLA, which improved to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the MPSF, posted its 11th consecutive victory over the Trojans, who fell to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the MPSF.
Klosterman hit .500. Teammate Chris Pena added 10 kills (hitting .615) and 2 aces, while Allan Vince had 5 blocks, Dennis Gonzalez had 4 blocks and Adam Shrader had 9 digs.
UCLA outhit USC, .352 to .220, and served 4 aces.
For the Trojans, Blake Tippett had 14 kills, Ian Gallagher came off the bench to post 7 kills (hitting .583), Chris McKniff had 6 blocks, J.T. Gilmour added 3 blocks and Joao Grangeiro had 7 digs.
USC trailed just 23-22 in the first game before the Bruins scored the next 4 points to open up a comfortable edge. The second game was tied at 9-9 when UCLA ran off 5 consecutive points and never was threatened as it hit .379 in the game to USC's .152. The score also was 9-9 in the third game before a Trojan serving error and then an attack error gave UCLA a lead it never relinquished.
USC next plays at No. 9 UC Irvine on Friday (Jan. 30) in an MPSF match before returning home to host Cal Baptist in a non-conference match on Tuesday (Feb. 3) at 7 p.m. in the North Gym.
