
Bruins Defeat Waves in Four Games

Third-ranked UCLA upset top-ranked and undefeated Pepperdine 3-1 on Saturday at Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins won 30-20, 30-21, 20-30, 30-24 in front of 1,526 fans in one hour and 46 minutes.
UCLA raised its record to 8-1 overall, 4-1 in MPSF play. The Waves fell to 6-1 and 2-1. The four-game loss also ended Pepperdine's streak of sweeps at six matches.
Junior Paul Johnson led UCLA with 16.5 points, 14 kills (.484), three block assists, three digs and an ace, followed by freshman Steve Klosterman and Chris Pe?a who each spiked 11 kills. Senior libero Adam Shrader and sophomore setter Dennis Gonzalez each recorded nine digs.
The Bruins hit .310 for the match and limited the Waves to a hitting percentage of .230, their worst of the season. UCLA served seven aces to Pepperdine's one. Pepperdine recorded 7.5 blocks to the Bruins' 7.0.
For Pepperdine, junior Sean Rooney recorded a match-high of 20 kills (.320). Junior Fred Winters added 18 kills, but was limited to an attack percentage of .195.
The Bruins' next home match is Wed., Feb. 4 vs. UC Santa Cruz at 7 p.m. in Pauley Paviion.
