The third-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team dropped a four-game decision to top-ranked BYU Thursday night in the opener of a two-match conference series.

BYU won 33-31, 30-24, 29-31, 32-31 in two hours and 10 minutes in front of a loud crowd of 1,728 in Pauley Pavilion. The victory raised BYU's record to 22-3, 19-1 in MPSF play. The Bruins fell to 20-5, 14-5.

The victory clinched the No.1 seed for BYU in the MPSF Tournament. The Cougars will host a first round match as well as the semifinals and finals if they win their quarterfinal playoff match on Apr. 24.

Junior Jonathan Acosta came off the bench for the Bruins and spiked 15 kills (.448) and added eight digs. Junior Kris Kraushaar added 13 kills and senior Chris Pena contributed 10. At the net, junior Paul Johnson led the Bruins with five total blocks and eight kills (.316). Senior libero Adam Shrader recorded 11 digs and setter Dennis Gonzalez had 57 assists.

Fernando Pessoa led the Cougars with 20 kills (.300) and Joe Hillman added 16 (.355).

Both teams will meet Friday night at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion.
