CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The top four spots in the Bruin lineup all had hits, RBI and runs scored, junior Allexis Bennett added three hits and senior Ally Carda tossed a complete-game shutout in #12 UCLA's 8-0, six-inning victory over #18 Missouri on Friday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Carda improved to 6-1 on the year, striking out seven and scattering seven hits in six innings with no walks allowed. She struck out one in every inning but the sixth, including the side in the fourth. The Bruins (11-3) had seven hits at the plate.
UCLA broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a fortuitous Missouri (7-2) error. Sophomore Gabrielle Maurice doubled to left to open the frame, senior Stephany LaRosa walked and both moved up on a sacrifice bunt by junior Brittany Moeai. One out later, freshman Maddy Jelenicki was walked intentionally to bring up senior Gracie Goulder, who hit a high chopper to third which was bobbled by Amanda Sanchez, allowing both Maurice and LaRosa to score to make it 2-0. Following a single off the pitcher by Bennett to re-load the bases, Carda doubled to right-center to bring home Jelenicki and Goulder with UCLA's third and fourth runs.
The Bruins added another four spot in the sixth to bring out the mercy rule. With one out, Goulder walked, Bennett singled over the shortstop and Carda was hit to load the bases for sophomore Delaney Spaulding, who doubled down the left-field line to bring home Goulder and Bennett to make it 6-0. An RBI grounder by Maurice scored Carda with UCLA's seventh run and a single to right by LaRosa plated Spaulding to finish off the win.
The Bruins play twice on Saturday against Ohio State at 12:30 p.m. and #8 Florida State at 3 p.m. Live stats will be available for both games on UCLABruins.com.
