Top-Seeded Women's Tennis Blanks Kentucky to Open ITA Indoor Play

February 07, 2015 | Women's Tennis

Charlottesville, Va. - The top-seeded UCLA women's tennis team got off to an excellent start at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Friday, downing unseeded Kentucky, 4-0 in the first round at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. With the win, the Bruins (4-0) move on to Saturday's quarterfinals where they will meet eighth-seeded Georgia at Noon (EST). The Bulldogs advanced with a 4-1 win over Michigan on Friday.

“It feels great, we always look forward to this trip," said UCLA head coach Stella Sampras Webster, who has guided the Bruins to the last three Indoor finals, winning it all in 2012. "We learn so much about our team and our players that it's such a great trip for us. We're excited to be here and get some tough matches to really challenge and test us to see where we're at right now.”

UCLA's top-ranked Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips got things started for the Bruins in doubles, downing Mami Adachi and Aldila Sutjiadi, 6-4 at court No. 1. Robin Anderson and Terri Fleming then followed suit at the No. 2 spot, clinching the doubles point for the Bruins with a 7-5 victory over Taylor Lederman and Nadia Ravita.

After helping UCLA clinch the doubles point, Anderson, the nation's second-ranked player, then played lights out against the Wildcats (7-2) in singles too, losing just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ravita at court No. 1 to make it 2-0 UCLA.

McPhillips and Fleming then closed out the win for the Bruins at court Nos. 3 and 6, respectively, as each player notched straight-set wins to give UCLA the 4-0 win.

"We're happy to have finished and gotten those four points," added Sampras Webster. “Kentucky made us work. It was a great match for us because we don't ever get to see them. They play really aggressive doubles, so it was something that we don't see a whole lot of. I really love their style of doubles. We had to make some adjustments, it was good to see our team able to do that. Every match was challenging, this is what we want and what we need.”
