Men's Soccer Stops Skid with 2-0 Win vs. OSU
October 02, 2016 | Men's Soccer
Los Angeles, Calif. - No. 13 UCLA scored two goals in a two-minute span to snap a two-game losing skid with a 2-0 victory against Oregon State. Jose Hernandez and Felix Vobejda scored the Bruin goals in the 56th and 58th minute, respectively.
The Bruins entered the contest without a goal – or a victory – in their last two games. Hernandez put an end to both streaks at 55:36 when he slotted a through ball from Brian Iloski far post past Beaver goalkeeper Nolan Wirth. Midfielder Matthew Powell also earned an assist.
Less than two minutes later, at 57:31, Vobejda and Jackson Yueill executed a give-and-go to perfection, with Vobejda finding Yueill open, and Yueill sending a ball forward to the top of the box back to an onrushing Vobejda. The senior midfielder one-timed it past Wirth for his first goal of the season. Yueill's assist was his Pac-12 leading sixth of the season.
"Obviously, every game we set out to score goals, and we have a group that knows how to score goals," said UCLA head coach Jorge Salcedo. "It took us a little bit in today's game, but we scored two really good team goals. It just shows the ability the group has to score with great combination play."
The Beavers' best scoring chance came late in the first half when Devonte Small's shot hit the crossbar and bounced down just on the goal line. The referee's call of no goal was confirmed at the next dead ball on a video review.
Freshman goalkeeper Kevin Silva earned a clean sheet in his collegiate debut, facing 11 shots and making one save.
"It feels good to win," Salcedo said. "We were in control the whole game, and now it's still taking the pieces that we need to be better and make them better the next few weeks."
UCLA (5-3-1, 1-1-0 in the Pac-12) will continue Pac-12 play on Saturday, Oct. 8 at San Diego State.
