UCLA Drops Pac-12 Opener to Washington, 4-0

September 29, 2016 | Men's Soccer

Two early goals sunk No. 13 UCLA in a 4-0 loss to No. 16 Washington in Thursday's Pac-12 opener at Drake Stadium. The Huskies scored twice in the first two and a half minutes to put UCLA in a big hole early and never eased off the pedal, scoring once more late in the first half and again in the 61st minute.

Washington's first two goals were scored off long throw-ins by Steven Wright. On the first, his throw-in found Justin Schmidt in the box, and Schmidt headed it over to Garret Jackson, who sent a header past UCLA goalkeeper Juan Cervantes at 1:16 to put Washington ahead. A little over a minute later, Wright unleashed another long throw, and Schmidt headed it into goal with 2:24 on the clock.

"When you spot teams goals early, it makes it even more difficult to break them down," said UCLA head coach Jorge Salcedo. "Teams will bunker in and sit back and make it even more challenging to find ways to create goal-scoring opportunities."

The Bruins (4-3-1, 0-1-0 in the Pac-12) gained an advantage at 38:01 when Corban Anderson was issued a red card after a tackle, forcing the Huskies (7-2-0, 1-0-0) to play a man down. But Washington took away the advantage, essentially, when it scored a third goal in the 43rd minute. Handwalla Bwana stole a pass at midfield, dribbled it towards goal and then shot from long-distance to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead just before halftime.

"It was surreal to be down two goals from the two throw-ins, and obviously that third goal was a killer blow for us," Salcedo said. "Going down 2-0 at halftime and being able to regroup would have been a much better scenario for us."

Washington added a goal in the 60th minute when Joey Parish scored off a rebounded shot by Kyle Coffee.

The Bruins outshot the Huskies, 18-9, but goalkeeper Auden Schilder made eight saves in the contest, including five in the second half. Cervantes finished with two saves.

UCLA will look to regroup on Sunday against Oregon State at 3pm at Drake Stadium.
