April 02, 2017 | Women's Tennis
PULLMAN, Wash. -- The No. 20 UCLA women's tennis team recorded its fourth consecutive Pac-12 victory Sunday, as it defeated Washington State, 6-1, at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse. The win over the Cougars was also the Bruins' third in a row away from home.
The Bruins claimed their sixth straight doubles point, as the teams of No. 22 Terri Fleming-Jada Hart and Ena Shibahara-Kristin Wiley remained unbeaten on the season. The pair of Shibahara and Wiley recorded the first win of the day and improved to 5-0 with a 6-3 decision over Guzal Yusupova and Ege Tomey on Court 3. Fleming and Hart then picked up the clincher over Aneta Miksovska and Victoria Matejevic, 6-4, on Court 1. The win improved the duo's overall record to 9-0 (5-0 in dual-match play) and gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead.
With only four courts at the Cougars' indoor facility, the teams' top quartets began singles play. No. 3 Shibahara gave the Bruins a multi-point lead with her 6-4, 6-1 win over Barbora Michalkova on Court 1 to improve to 31-5 (11-2 in dual-match play). UCLA's other ranked singles player, No. 88 Hart, extended the Bruin advantage to 3-0 with a straight-set win of her own, 6-2, 6-1 over Matejevic on Court 4. The Cougars made a push with a 6-3, 6-4 win by Yusupova over Fleming on Court 2, but the Bruins' Alaina Miller provided the overall clinching point with a 6-3, 7-6 (2) win over Mikovska on Court 3.
Courts 5 and 6 then took center stage with the match already decided. A day after posting the clincher at Washington, Gabby Andrews picked up another straight-set win, 6-3, 6-4 over Melisa Ates on Court 5. Kristin Wiley went to a third-set, 10-point tiebreaker against Lejla Colic, which the Bruin claimed, 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (9).
UCLA will look to continue its red-hot Pac-12 play when it returns to Sunset Canyon Tennis Courts Friday to host Colorado (1:30 p.m.).
