No. 20 UCLA to Host Colorado, Utah
April 05, 2017 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES -- Following three straight matches away from Sunset Canyon Tennis Courts, the No. 20 UCLA women's tennis team returns home this week to host Colorado and Utah. The Bruins will begin their brief homestand with the Buffaloes, who visit Friday, April 7, at 1:30 p.m.
UCLA enters play Friday riding a four-match winning streak. Following a Pac-12-opening home split against Stanford and Cal, the Bruins journeyed through the Pacific Northwest with trips to Oregon, Washington and Washington State. Two weeks after topping the Ducks, 4-1, the Bruins handled the Huskies by an identical score. In a match broadcast by Pac-12 Networks, UCLA picked up the doubles point before Washington quickly answered with the first singles tally. Terri Fleming, Ena Shibahara and Gabby Andrews ran off the next three wins, though, as Andrews clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-0 decision over Alexis Prokopuik on Court 5.
In Pullman, Wash., the Bruins picked up the first three points of the match to distance themselves from the Cougars. Following a Washington State win on Court 2, UCLA's Alaina Miller held off Aneta Miksovska on Court 3, 6-3, 7-6 (2), to clinch. The teams played out the final two singles matches, as Andrews and Kristin Wiley picked up wins on Courts 5 and 6, respectively, to settle the score at 6-1.
There are streaks aplenty for the Bruins, who have scored six consecutive doubles points, as the teams of Fleming-Hart (9-0), Shibahara-Wiley (5-0) and Andrews-Miller (2-0) have yet to drop a set on the season. In singles, meanwhile, Shibahara has won five consecutive matches, while Andrews has taken three in a row.
When the Oracle/ITA rankings were released Tuesday, the Bruins held steady at No. 20. In singles, Shibahara climbed to No. 2 in this week's installment, while Hart checked in at No. 114. The teams of Hart-Shibahara (No. 8) and Fleming-Hart (No. 23), meanwhile, are among the top-ranked doubles pairs.
In Colorado, the Bruins will welcome a team looking to rebound from three consecutive losses and a 1-5 conference start. The Buffaloes boast a 5-4 record on the road that it hopes to build upon. UCLA holds a 6-0 all-time record against Colorado, including a 6-1 road win at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center last year (April 1).
Saturday's opponent, Utah, holds a 7-6 record on the season and a 2-4 mark in Pac-12 play. The Utes nearly upset then-No. 14 California in their most recent match, as they dropped a 4-3 decision to the Golden Bears in Salt Lake City. The Bruins possess a 15-0 all-time mark against Utah, including a 4-2 win at Eccles Tennis Center on April 3, 2016.
