Senior Kendall Gustafson won four events to take a big lead in the heptathlon after the first day of competition at the Aztec Invitational on Thursday.
Gustafson took first in the 100 hurdles (14.50), high jump (1.74m, 5-8.50), shot put (12.67, 41-7) and 200m (25.19) for a total of 3,387 points. She is 302 points ahead of second-place Asia Smith of San Diego State with three events to go. Gustafson holds a personal best score of 5,442 points, set in 2016.
Competition in the heptathlon will conclude with the long jump, javelin and 800m, beginning Friday at 12pm. Other track and field events begin on Friday at 8am.
