Men’s Fourth-Place Finish at Pre-Nationals Highlights Regular Season Finales for UCLA XC

The UCLA cross country team saw its 25th-ranked men place fourth in the "White" 8K race at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals, as the program capped its regular season on Saturday in a pair of competitive meets.
The Bruin men carded 205 points to earn the fourth-place finish, while the (RV) women beat two-thirds of the field to take 11th in the women's "Cardinal" 6K race. Meanwhile, in Sunnyvale, Calif., the UCLA women finished in ninth place at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational.
WISCONSIN PRE-NATIONALS
Once again, junior Garrett Reynolds led the way for the men, clocking a final time of 24:15.5 to notch 25th place. Both Colin Burke (30th, 24:19.1) and George Gleason (44th, 24:32.9) earned top-50 finishes, while Cole Smith (24:40.0) and Chris Morzenti (24:42.0) rounded out the scoring for UCLA.
The Bruins knocked off two top-10 teams in No. 4 Portland and No. 10 Air Force while finishing second (Washington) among Pac-12 teams.
"We talked about making sure we were a single-digit team," said assistant coach Devin Elizondo. "It was something that they were able to do, and the pack just looked really good. Between our five, it was around 22 seconds of separation, which is really strong."
On the women's side, two sophomores in Erika Adler (20:44.6) and Christina Rice (20:46.0) finished neck-and-neck, going 24th and 26th, respectively, to pace the Bruins to an 11th-place finish. Claire Markey crossed the finish line at the 21.22.0 mark to claim 66th place, while Jackie Garner (21:55.3), Lilly Schmidt (22:32.2) and Taylor Taite (22:36.2) rounded out the top seven on the women's side.
The Bruin women knocked off two top-25 squads in No. 18 Ole Miss and No. 25 Florida State.
"It was a really solid day for the women," said Elizondo. "It's confirming the work that we've been doing. We still have two weeks until Pac-12 [Championships] and four weeks until [NCAA West] Regionals to put it all together for a strong championship run."
BRONCO INVITATIONAL
Freshman Gwyneth George was the top runner on the women's side, finishing in 21:19.2 for a 40th-place finish in her first-career 6K race. Alyssa Bautista followed at No. 46 with a time of 21:23.4, while Kennedy Meyer (21.30.8) and Marisa Villegas (21.37.5) took 51st and 59th, respectively.
A trio of runners competed for the Bruin men in the 8K, led by Tyler Janes' 31st-place finish and time of 24:27.9.
"I'm super proud of this group," said Elizondo. "I like where they are in terms of youth and development. It is very strong."
