No. 13 UCLA Tops Cal, 4-3
March 10, 2018 | Women's Tennis
BERKELEY, Calif. โ The No. 13 UCLA women's tennis team topped host California, 4-3, to ensure a split on the Bruins' Northern California road trip. Jada Hart provided the clinching win in singles play, which was delayed for approximately one hour due to rain.
The teams previously squared off in Los Angeles on Feb. 24, though there were few parallels. The doubles lineups remained the same, but each singles matchup was a new one.
The Cal doubles team of Jasie Dunk-Maria Smith jumped out to a 2-1 lead versus Alaina Miller-Ena Shibahara on Court 3, but the tide would quickly turn. The Bruin duo took the next five games, giving the visitors the first win of the day. Cal still looked poised to take the first point of the day, however, the Golden Bear tandems held leads deep into play.
Olivia Hauger-Julia Rosenqvist of Cal was knotted with No. 22 Terri Fleming-Jada Hart at three games apiece on Court 1 before the Golden Bears took two of the next three games. Hauger-Rosenqvist would go on to finish the job, dispatching the nationally-ranked Bruin duo by a 6-4 score.
The UCLA team of Abi Altick-Ayan Broomfield saw itself down by a 4-1 score on Court 2, with Anna Bright-Vivian Glozman primed to give the Golden Bears an early advantage. Five of the next six games would belong to the Bruins, though, as the all-newcomer pair moved ahead, 6-5. A tiebreaker would be forced, but Altick-Broomfield completed its comeback in a close one, 7-6(5).
For the second straight day, No. 118 Miller of the Bruins picked up the first singles win of a match. The junior made quick work of Dunk on Court 6, 6-1, 6-2. In a ranked Court 1 matchup between No. 68 Rosenqvist and No. 8 Shibahara, the Golden Bear sophomore prevailed in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, giving Cal its first point of the day. Completing the two-set contests, No. 46 Altick took down Cal's Smith on Court 4, to put UCLA one point away from victory.
No. 104 Fleming was unable to come all the way back from a lost first set, as No. 32 Hauger put the Bruin senior away in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.
On Court 2, No. 41 Hart charged back from her lost first set versus No. 35 Bright to not only take the second set, but the third and the overall decision. Hart's clinching win, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, was her second of the season against the Golden Bears. Broomfield went on to retire on Court 5, but the match was decided.
The Bruins will return home for a nonconference match with No. 20 Oklahoma State on Wednesday, March 14. Play from Los Angeles Tennis Center will begin at 1:30 p.m. UCLA will conclude the week with a visit from conference foe No. 21 Oregon Sunday (noon).
