BRUINS IN THE POLLS
The Bruins moved up one spot to second in this week's ESPN.com/USA Softball rankings, earning two additional points and one first-place vote, while coming in at third for the fourth week in a row at the USA Today/NFCA poll, receiving the same amount of points. UCLA is one of seven Pac-12 teams ranked in the Top 25 of either poll: Washington (#1 NFCA/#1 USA Softball), Oregon (#6 NFCA/#6 USA Softball), Arizona (#9 NFCA/#9 USA Softball), Arizona State (#10 USA Softball/#13 NFCA), California (#16 NFCA/#16 USA Softball) and Oregon State (#25 USA Softball), with Utah also receiving votes in the USA Softball poll. In the Pac-12 Preseason Coaches poll, UCLA was second, earning 55 points and a pair of first-place votes.
JORDAN NAMED PAC-12 FOW FOR THIRD TIME
Redshirt freshman Aaliyah Jordan was named Pac-12 Conference Freshman of the Week for the third time this season on Tuesday after helping the Bruins remain undefeated with five victories at the Louisville Slugger Invitational at Long Beach State.
Jordan, who was also Pac-12 FOW on Feb. 20 and Feb. 27, hit .529 with nine hits in 17 at-bats, adding a home run, five runs batted in and five runs scored. She had one RBI in all five contests and hits and runs in four of five games, including multiple hits in three.
She began the weekend with an RBI single and a run against Michigan State on March 9, adding a pair of singles, including an RBI hit later that afternoon versus San Jose State. On March 11, the Bruins had a pair of matchups against ranked teams, with Jordan going 6-for-7 in the doubleheader. The redshirt freshman went 2-for-3 with an RBI single, a double and a walk against #16 Ohio State in game one. In the nightcap, Jordan set a career high with four hits versus #21 Long Beach State. She hit what proved to be the game-winning home run in the fifth inning, adding singles in her other three at-bats.
Jordan's Freshman of the Week award is the 10th in UCLA history in just the fourth year of the award's existence and fourth this season, as Briana Perez earned the honor on Feb. 13. Along with UCLA's four Pac-12 Freshman of the Week awards, redshirt sophomore Rachel Garcia earned a pair of national awards (NFCA and USA Softball Co-Player of the Week) on Feb. 27.
ONE OF TWO
The Bruins' 24-0 start is the sixth best in program history, with a win on Friday at Oregon matching the fifth-best start (25-0 in 2004). The top four starts in school history have seen UCLA win at least 32 games to open the season (35-0 in 1999 and 2001; 33-0 in 1992; 32-0 in 1991). UCLA is one of two remaining undefeated teams, with Pac-12 foe Washington holding a 27-0 record.
NEWS AND NOTES
With the Feb. 25 win against Missouri, head coach Kelly Inouye-Perez earned the 500th victory of her career ... after posting 13 comeback victories last season, the Bruins already have five this year ... UCLA has won 75 in a row when ahead after five innings (13 times this season).
