TUCSON, Ariz. -- No. 1 UCLA ran its 2019 record to 7-0, its best start in school history, with its fourth-straight win over Arizona State (2-2), 5-0, at the Pac-12 South Tournament on Saturday morning at Bear Down Beach. The Bruins improved to 4-1 all-time against the Sun Devils without dropping a set.
The new pairing of freshman Lindsey Sparks and senior Izzy Carey put the Bruins up 1-0 with a straight-set win on court five over ASU's Natalie Braun and Kara Woodard, 21-11, 21-16.
The reigning Pac-12 Pair of the Week, junior Lily Justine and senior Sarah Sponcil made it 2-0 UCLA with a dominant straight-set win over the Sun Devils' Bailey Anderson and Ashley Wenz on court two, 21-14, 21-5.
The clinching point came from court three as senior Zana Muno returned to the lineup after missing the USC dual and paired with freshman Abby Van Winkle to post a straight-set victory over ASU's Katie Cross and Ellyson Lundberg, 21-18, 21-18.
Seniors Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara made it 4-0 with a hard-fought straight-set win on court one over the Sun Devils' Katelyn Carballo and Oluoma Okaro, 21-17, 21-18.
Another new pairing appeared on court four as sophomore Lea Monkhouse and junior Savvy Simo completed the 5-0 sweep with a straight-set win over Emily Anderson and Lauren Weintraub, 21-13, 21-11.
The Bruins return to action later today at the Pac-12 South Tournament at Bear Down Beach in Tucson, Ariz., when they face Washington at 1:00 p.m. The Bruins will conclude play on Sunday, March 3 with a 9:15 a.m. PT tilt against No. 11 California. Both duals will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks.
