FULLERTON, Calif. - Sophomore Holly Azevedo and redshirt junior Rachel Garcia combined on a one-hit shutout, as the second-ranked Bruins closed out the Judi Garman Classic with a 4-0 victory over UConn on Sunday at Anderson Family Field.
Azevedo picked up the win to move to 6-0, striking out three in five innings and allowing only a two-out single in the second inning. It was the lone baserunner for UConn (4-12). Garcia got the final six outs, including four by strikeout, for her second save of the season.
UCLA (17-1) had eight hits from six different players, as sophomore Briana Perez and freshman Kelli Godin both recorded two-hit contests.
After four scoreless innings, the Bruins broke through in the fifth. With one out, Godin singled up the middle, stole second and stayed there on an infield single to short by Perez. Junior Bubba Nickles followed with a single up the middle to bring in Godin to make it 1-0. Garcia then tapped one to short for a fielder's choice, which allowed Perez to score the Bruins' second run.
In the seventh, Nickles led off with a walk, and one out later, senior Zoe Shaw walked. Senior Brianna Tautalafua then singled up the middle to bring in Nickles to make it 3-0. A wild pitch would score Shaw to increase the lead to 4-0.
The Bruins are back in action on Friday at Easton Stadium, taking on Robert Morris at 7 p.m. as part of the UCLA/LBSU Invitational.
