LOS ANGELES - Freshman Megan Faraimoย struck out 12 in a one-hit shutout, while the Bruins' offense broke the game open with an eight-run fourth inning, as No. 2 UCLA run-ruled Robert Morris, 11-0, in five innings on Friday at Easton Stadium.
Faraimoย was perfect for the first 4 1/3 innings before surrendering a one-out double in the fifth. It would be the lone Robert Morris (3-14) baserunner allowed by the freshman, who struck out the first six batters of the game. She added two more strikeouts in the third, fourth and fifth frames.ย
Offensively, the Bruins (18-1) had 12 hits from nine different players, as senior Taylor Pack, sophomore Briana Perez and freshman Kelli Godin all had two-hit contests.
UCLA struck first in its initial at-bat, as Perez laced a ball over the first-base bag and down the right-field line. The ball rattled around in the corner and kicked to the wall in right-center, and with Perez running the whole way, she came home on the inside-the-park homer to put the Bruins ahead.
In the second, UCLA tacked on two more on a two-out rally. Freshman Colleen Sullivan drew a walk and scored on a triple to center by sophomore Kinsley Washington. An infield single off the bat of Godinย plated Washington to make it 3-0.
The Bruins sent 14 to the plate in the fourth inning. Sullivan led off with a single up the middle, and was pinch-run for by senior Danae Blodgett, who moved to second on a Godin bunt hit, to third on a wild pitch and home on a single to right-center by Nickles. With Godinย at third, Perez, who was hit by a pitch, at second and Nickles at first, redshirt sophomore Aaliyah Jordan cleared the right-center fence for a grand slam, her fourth homer of the season, to make it 8-0. Redshirtย junior Rachel Garcia followed by reaching on an error, with freshman Anna Vines coming in to run and scoring on a Pack homer off the video board clock in left, her second of the season, to up the lead to 10-0. Senior Brianna Tautalafua then singled up the middle, and was pinch-run for by sophomore Alana Snow, who scored on a double to center from senior Paige Halsteadย to score the Bruins' 11th run.
The Bruins will play twice more at Easton Stadium on Saturday against BYU (3 p.m.) and Liberty (5:30 p.m.).
