LOS ANGELES - No. 5 UCLA earned its second victory over a Top 25 opponent this season, shutting out No. 22 Wisconsin, 1-0, at at Wallis Annenberg Stadium on Saturday evening. Junior forward Kennedy Faulknor scored the game-winning goal in the 51st minute.
Wisconsin (4-2-1) put forth a solid attack in the first half, taking seven shots to UCLA's three, including a two-shot sequence in the 33rd minute by Dani Rhodes where she hit the crossbar and missed high on the follow-up. The Badgers also missed on a dangerous cross that was cleared off the line by Bruin defender Lucy Parker, and the follow-up shot that was saved by UCLA goalkeeper Teagan Micah.
The Bruins (5-1-0) quickly turned it around in the second half, however. Faulknor had an opportunity in the 48th minute but her shot went wide. She did not miss two minutes later. After taking a pass from Jessie Fleming, Faulknor fired from the top of the box to the right side past Wisconsin goalkeeper Jordyn Bloomer to score her first goal of the season.
The Bruin defense held strong in the second half to make Faulknor's goal stand, allowing five shots, just two on goal, in the second period. The Badgers had a late corner in the 88th minute, but Micah was able to make a save on the shot by Macy Monticello, her season-high fifth of the game. Micah's shutout was her fourth of the season and 30th of her career.
UCLA will next face Pepperdine in Hawai'i next Thursday, Sept. 19.
