Bruins Head Back to Seattle for MPSF Championships

LOS ANGELES โ UCLA's track and field team begins postseason competition this weekend as the Bruins head to Seattle for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MSPF) Indoor Championships. The two-day competition begins Friday, Feb. 28 and is held at Dempsey Indoor on the campus of the University of Washington. A subscription-based live stream of the meet is available at FloTrack.com.

Friday's meet program kicks off with the women's weight throw at 12:00 p.m. PT. The women's pentathlon opens the track schedule with the 60m hurdles at 12:15 p.m. PT. The night concludes with the men's distance medley relay (DMR) at 7:25 p.m. PT. Saturday's meet schedule opens with the women's high jump at 10:00 a.m. PT. The women's and men's 4x400m relays are the final events of the league indoor championships, with the gun slated to go off for each event at 2:30 p.m. PT and 2:55 p.m. PT, respectively.

BRUIN COMPETITORS
Kenroy Higgins II and Myles Webb lead the Bruin charge in the men's 60m this weekend. Higgins (6.64) and Webb (6.69) have each posted personal-best times in the event this season good for second and fourth all-time, respectively, on the UCLA all-time indoor list. Sophomore Sean Lee also headlines UCLA's entries with his appearance in the high jump. Lee cleared 2.18m (7-01.75) at the New Mexico Team Open (Feb. 1) earlier this season, the fourth-best indoor mark in school history.

Alyssa Wilson leads the way in the women's throws, as the junior is set to compete in the shot put and weight throw this weekend. The junior has already won eight competitions in the throws this season and set the new UCLA weight throw record at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational (Fen. 13). Sophomore Gwyn George leads a trio of Bruin women in the mile while Isa Videler toes the line in the women's pentathlon. George (4:48.55) and Videler (3,896 pts) have the No. 8 and No. 5 UCLA all-time indoor marks in their respective events.

STIFF COMPETITION
Seven MPSF teams on the women's side currently rank in the USTFCCCA Top 25, including four in the top 10. Eventual Pac-12 outdoor adversaries USC (No. 4), Oregon (No. 7), and Stanford (No. 9) are all set to toe the line against the Bruin women this weekend. The men's competition features a pair of top-25 opponents in No. 5 Oregon and No. 12 USC.

HISTORIC SEASON
The 2020 UCLA indoor squad has put together an historic season thus far, compiling a collection of some of the best times and marks in program history. 24 of UCLA's all-time top-10 indoor marks have been set this season (12 men's, 12 women's) and, in total, 41 top-10 marks have been set by Bruins on the current track and field roster.

Redshirt sophomore Shae Anderson has been stellar in her debut season with the Bruins, as the Oregon transfer has already broken the UCLA indoor 400m record twice and helped the 4x400m relay squad to the second-fastest time in school history (3:33.98 โ Don Kirby Elite Invitational). Anderson went 53.46 at the Dr. Sander Columbia Challenge (Jan. 25) to break Sheena Johnson's original indoor record of 53.63, set back in 2003. Anderson then went on to clock a time of 52.07 at the Don Kirby Elite Invite (Feb. 14) to demolish her own school record and post the second-fastest collegiate time in the nation thus far.

Junior Alyssa Wilson has put together a dominant indoor season in the throws, winning eight of her 10 collegiate competitions thus far. Wilson made history in the weight throw at the Don Kirby Invite, tossing the implement 22.98m (75-04.75) to break Ida Storm's previous mark of 74-00.25, set back in 2015.

LAST TIME OUT
The 2019 league indoor championships saw the UCLA men finish second overall, the team's highest finish since 2010. Robert Brandt doubled with victories in the 3000m (school record โ 7:55.60) and 5000m while Sondre Guttormsen and Justin Stafford notched league titles in the pole vault and weight throw, respectively. The Bruin women finished 13th overall last year. Christina Rice finished second in the 5000m while Ashlie Blake took third in the shot put.

The UCLA women enter this weekend's competition ranked in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country (USTFCCCA) for the second-straight week, checking in at No. 19 in the most recent national rankings. The Bruin men's squad is the fifth-ranked team in the West Region, up a spot from last week's rankings.

NEXT MEET
The NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., will be held from Friday, Mar. 13-14. Per USTFCCCA guidelines, the nation's top 16 men's and women's student-athletes from all individual events will qualify to compete in the NCAA meet. For each relay contest, the top 12 men's and women's declared relay teams will be accepted to compete.
