Freshmen Lead UCLA to 8th at Amer Ari Invitational

Freshmen Pablo Ereño Perez and Alvaro Mueller Baumgart Lucena helped UCLA to its first under-par finish of the season.

KAMUELA, Hawai'i – The UCLA men's golf team concluded the Amer Ari Invitational at the Hapuna Golf Course with its first under-par team score of the season with a 26-under 838 to finish in eighth place.
 
No. 5 Oklahoma State took the tournament title at 50-under 814 with a 24-under 264 in the final round. The Cowboys' Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra won the individual title with a 19-under 197.
 
Freshman Pablo Ereño Perez posted UCLA's best score in the tournament with an 8-under 208 for the first top-20 finish of his career, tied for 20th.
 
Ereño Perez – coming off a UCLA individual season-low score of 6-under 66 on Friday – recorded an even-par 72 on day three, parring 14 holes and sinking birdies on the par-4 1st and par-5 11th.
 
Freshman Alvaro Mueller Baumgart Lucena, who finished second for the Bruins in the tournament tied for 23rd at 7-under 209, posted UCLA's lowest score of the day alongside graduate Devon Bling with a pair of 4-under 68's. Similar to his second round, Muller scorched the front nine with five birdies for a first half score of 5-under 31. In back-to-back rounds, Muller has notched the first two under-par rounds of his career.
 
Bling tied for 34th after rising up 21 spots on the individual leader board with his 4-under 68 performance. Bling matched Muller's bogey-free front nine and struck for three consecutive birdies from holes two through four.
 
Graduate Eddy Lai rounded out the Bruins' counting scores with a 1-under 71. UCLA finished the tournament with its four counting scores coming in under-par fashion in the final two rounds. And for the first time this season, the Bruins had four golfers finish a tournament under par. Lai tied for 45th at 3-under 213.
 
Lai recorded for three birdies in his final round on the par-5 8th, par-3 13th and par-5 14th.
 
UCLA's next tournament will be in two-and-a-half weeks from Feb. 21-23 at The Prestige held at the PGA West Norman Course in La Quinta, Calif.
