Corvallis, Ore. – In a battle of top 20 conference opponents, the No. 18 UCLA football team dropped just its second game of the season at No. 15 Oregon State on Saturday evening, suffering a 36-24 loss to the Beavers before a sellout crowd of 37,600 at Reser Stadium.
Although UCLA (4-2; 1-2 Pac-12) never led in Saturday's contest, the Bruins were able to keep the game close throughout. The Beavers (6-1; 3-1 Pac-12) started strong, moving out to an early lead following a pair of field goals plus a 10-yard touchdown reception from quarterback DJ Uiagalelei to tight end Jack Velling to make it 13-0.
UCLA went scoreless in the first quarter, however managed to get on the board early in the second when freshman quarterback Dante Moore connected with receiver Logan Loya for a 10-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 13-7.
The two teams then traded field goals, with Bruin kicker R.J. Lopez connecting on a 36-yarder to cut the lead to 13-10, followed by a subsequent kick by Beaver Atticus Sappington to put Oregon State up by six again at 16-10.
UCLA had a chance to potentially get on the board again just prior to halftime as the Bruins were driving in Oregon State territory with just over a minute to play. Unfortunately, a Moore pass to wide receiver J.Michael Sturdivant was picked off by Ryan Cooper Jr., giving the Beavers a 23-10 lead heading into the intermission.
Following the break, Oregon State took a 29-10 lead when Uiagalelei found wideout Silas Bolden for a 43-yard touchdown reception. The Beavers then tried to go up 31-10, however their two-point conversion failed.
UCLA remained within striking distance after a 10-yard touchdown run by T.J. Harden followed by a successful extra point from Lopez cut the lead to 29-17.
Unfortunately, the Bruins were never able to gain any ground, as the two teams traded touchdowns for the remainder of the contest, with Oregon State's Velling getting in the end zone again on a 32-yard reception from Uiagalelei, followed by Bruin running back Carson Steele scoring on a 7-yard rushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter to make it 36-24.
UCLA's defense did not give up any fourth-quarter points to the Beavers on Saturday.
