Men Claim Fourth, Women Finish Fifth at Jim Click Shootout

Tucson, Ariz. – UCLA Track and Field completed its day of competition in Tucson, Ariz., with two top five team finishes at the meet hosted by the University of Arizona Saturday. The men's squad placed fourth as a team behind Nebraska, Arizona and No. 11 Minnesota; Arizona claimed first on the women's side and the Bruins finished in fifth.
For the third-consecutive week, Federica Botter claims the new school record in the women's javelin throw. The graduate student threw 53.57m (175-09) at the Jim Click Shootout for her new personal best and the new school-leading throw for the outdoor javelin event. Botter set the previous record at the Texas Relays on March 31.
Field Results
Mayyi Mahama started things off right for the Bruins in the women's hammer throw, the first event in the Shootout. Mahama threw a mark of 65.28m (214-02), good for first place in the event. Lyvante Su'emai joined her Bruin teammate with a personal-best throw of 60.24m (197-08) to claim fifth. Kris Emig (63.28m, 207-07) and Michael Pinckney (61.41m, 201-06) placed sixth and seventh, respectively, in the men's hammer event.
Botter placed third in her javelin competition, and Lauren McFall threw a mark of 42.89m (140-08) in the event.
Su'emai captured third place in the women's discus with her 53.63m throw. Natalie Ramirez (51.97m, 170-06) also placed in the top five in event, claiming fifth with her mark. Lydia Liu was the final Bruin in the event, and she threw 46.94m in the discus competition.
The Bruins had two top-five finishes in the men's discus event. Aidan Elbettar (57-03m, 187-01) placed third with his performance, and Pinckney threw a mark that landed him in fifth place (55.96m, 183-07).
Ramirez and Su'emai also competed in women's shot put; Ramirez threw for 15.03m (49-03.75) and Su'emai recorded a 14.32m (46-11.75) toss in the event.
Megan Ronan and Jade McDonald led the way for the UCLA jumpers; Ronan placed fifth in the long jump with a mark of 5.75m (18-10.50), and McDonald (5.60m, 18-04.50) came in ninth in the finals of the event.
McDonald also competed in the women's triple jump, placing fifth with her mark of 12.06m (39-07).
On the men's side, Jalyn Jackson had two third-place finishes in the jump events. Jackson finished with a 7.68m (25-02.50) mark in the long jump as the Bruins' sole competitor in event and recorded a 15.01m (49-03) finish in the triple jump. Jackson finished right behind Jelaani Davis who claimed second in the triple jump (15.32m, 50-03.25).
Aaron Kim was UCLA's lone high jumper on the weekend, clearing 2.05m (6-08.75) for fifth place in the event.
Five Bruins placed in the women's pole vault final; Allison Leigh was UCLA's top performer, clearing 3.90m (12-09.50) for third place in the event. Katerina Adamiec (3.75m, 12-03.50) and Mia Cervantes (3.75m, 12-03.50) placed sixth and seventh to join Leigh in the top 10 of the pole vault finals. Samantha Serex (3.60m, 11-09.75) and Isabella Grant (3.45m, 11-03.75) were the final two Bruins in the event.
Hunter O'Brien competed in the men's pole vault, recording a mark of 4.90m (16-0.75) for sixth in the event.
Track Results
The Bruin men competed in five track events on Saturday: 100m, 200m, 400m, 400m hurdles and the men's 4x400m relay. UCLA placed in the top five in four out of those events, claiming victory in the 400m hurdles.
Yan Vazquez ran a 51.29 in the event to earn first place; Shawn Toney trailed his Bruin teammate to finish sixth (55.03) in the hurdling competition.
Myles Misener-Daley had a strong showing in two sprint events. Misener-Daley placed second in the 200m sprint, running a 20.71 in the top section of the event; the senior ran a 10.46 in the 100m event for fifth place.
John Robinson IV (10.60, 21.16) and Kelley Stephens (10.90, 22.03) also ran in both the 100m and 200m competitions.
On the women's side, Makenzy Pierre-Webster came away with two third-place finishes in her day of competing. The Canadian sprinter ran a 23.53 in the 200m event and a 53.28 in the 400m race to put points on the board for the Bruins.
Sonia Virk joined Pierre-Webster as a third-place finisher; Virk ran a 1:00.52 in the women's 400m hurdles for her spot on the podium.
The men competed in the 400m race, running Chase Wells and Sam Herenton in a tightly-contested event. Wells (48.05) and Herenton (48.07) placed fifth and sixth, respectively, to earn five points for the Bruins.
The men's 4x400m relay team closed out the events for UCLA on Saturday, placing fifth in their final race of the day. Chase Wells, Sam Herenton, Shawn Toney and Yan Vazquez ran a 3:12.64 in the relay.
