No. 12 Women's Tennis Drops 4-3 Thriller to No. 3 Oklahoma State

URBANDALE, Iowa – In a match that featured four third sets, the 12th-ranked UCLA women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 thriller against No. 3 Oklahoma State in ITA Kickoff Weekend action Saturday at Life Time Fitness Des Moines.
The Bruins (1-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with Elise Wagle's singles win, but the Cowgirls (3-0) answered with three consecutive results in their favor. Bianca Fernandez won a third-set tiebreaker to pull UCLA even, but Oklahoma State's Anastasiya Komar would ultimately provide the clinching victory up top.
Teaming up for the first time since 2022, Bruins Kimmi Hance and Sasha Vagramov struck first in doubles play. Their 6-4 win versus Raquel Gonzalez and Ayumi Miyamoto was quickly answered by Komar and Ange Oby Kajuru on the top court. The Cowgirls got the best of Wagle and Tian Wagle in a 6-3 result, turning all attention toward Court 3. There, a tiebreaker was needed to decide the initial point. UCLA's Ahmani Guichard and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer took it by a 7-3 margin over Safiya Carrington and Kristina Novak.
Wagle needed a tiebreaker to take the first set on Court 5, which she did by a 7-4 score. The Bruins seized three first sets in all. Wagle quickly closed it out, with her 7-6(4), 6-1 victory increasing the lead to 2-0. The other straight-set decision was made on Court 6, where Novak bested No. 99 Guichard 7-6(4), 7-5 to cut Oklahoma State's deficit in half.
In a back-and-forth contest on Court 2, No. 2 Kajuru outlasted Hance 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(2). The Cowgirls' winning streak continued on Court 4, as No. 53 Lucia Peyre edged Lutkemeyer 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Fernandez tied the overall score again with her first career dual-match singles win. The freshman eked past No. 62 Carrington in comeback fashion 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(4) on Court 3.
With all eyes on Court 1, Tian rallied from a 1-4 third-set deficit to pull level in the third set. The 13th-ranked Komar provided the heroics for the Cowgirls, however, taking the final two games and 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory.
The Bruins meet host Iowa State or Old Dominion in Sunday's consolation match.
