ITA Regionals Trip Nets Men's Tennis Two Championships

TEMPE, Ariz. โ The UCLA men's tennis team posted a pair of championship performances Tuesday at Kiwanis Tennis Center, as Spencer Johnson and the pair of Alexander Hoogmartens and Aadarsh Tripathi swept the ITA Southwest Regional Championships singles and doubles titles.
All three student-athletes will compete at November's NCAA Championships in Waco, Texas as a result of their showings. Johnson earned his spot in the singles field when he advanced to the final round Monday, while Hoogmartens and Tripathi sealed their spot by claiming the doubles crown Tuesday.
The 55th-ranked Johnson, who was seeded second in the singles draw, won six matches in five days without dropping a set. He completed his run by taking down 121st-ranked and No. 10 seed Noah Zamora of UC Irvine 6-2, 6-3. Johnson downed No. 91 and third-seeded Savriyan Danilov of San Diego 7-5, 7-6(2) in the semifinals. Johnson also paired with Emon van Loben Sels to make the doubles quarterfinal round.
Hoogmartens and Tripathi, who had never played together before Saturday's second round, defeated the fourth-seeded combination of USD's Danilov and Iiro Vasa 6-4, 7-6(6) Tuesday. Seeded third entering play, Hoogmartens and Tripathi beat another USD tandem โ Stian Klaassen and Neo Niedner โ in the semifinals.
In addition to his doubles run alongside Johnson, van Loben Sels made the singles semifinal round before falling to Zamora. In beating No. 101 Karl Lee of USC 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 for a trip to the quarterfinals, van Loben Sels, notched the first ranked win of his career.
Each of the participating Bruins โ Hoogmartens, Johnson, Tripathi, van Loben Sels, Gianluca Ballotta, Giacomo Revelli and Leo von Bismarck โ picked up at least one singles victory. Both UCLA doubles teams in action made the quarterfinal round.
