February 24, 2024 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. โ Redshirt senior Maya Brady capped a five-run comeback in the seventh inning with a walk-off single to help the No. 19 UCLA softball team defeat Nebraska, 9-8, in its first game at the Mary Nutter Classic on Friday. Sophomore Taylor Tinsley twirled a shutout in UCLA's next game to help the Bruins (5-4) defeat No. 24 Northwestern, 1-0.
ย
UCLA was tasked with overcoming an 8-4 Cornhuskers (6-5) lead with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Megan Grant and Sharlize Palacios ignited the rally with back-to-back singles. Jadelyn Allchin continued her hot start to the season with an RBI double to score Liesl Osteen, who pinch ran for Grant. A walk to Thessa Malau'ulu in the next at-bat loaded the bases for Ramsey Suarez. Suarez hit a routine groundball to second base that skipped between the Nebraska fielder's legs and into the right field, scoring two runs to cut the lead to just one run, 8-7.
ย
Taylor Stephens came up clutch with her first hit of the season on a single into right field to score the game-tying run. The next batter, Brady, continued the parade of hits with a single up the middle to score the walk-off run.
ย
The Bruins took a 4-1 lead on the Cornhuskers in the first inning. Sparking the early offense was a lead-off home run by Brady. A single by Savannah Pola, Megan Grant hit-by-pitch and walk to Palacios loaded the bases for Allchin who knocked in two Bruins with a single to center field. Suarez produced a sacrifice fly out to right field to score UCLA's fourth run of the inning.
ย
Allchin finished the game 3-for-4 with a team-high three runs batted in. Through the Bruins' first nine games of the season, Allchin ranks second on the team with seven runs batted in.
ย
Nebraska retook the lead with seven runs scattered across the next six innings. Cornhuskers' shortstop Billie Andrews homered twice in the game.
ย
Tinsley was credited with the win in the circle following her one shutout inning in the seventh. That set the tone for the rest of Tinsley's night.
ย
The sophomore pitcher scattered just three hits and two walks her complete-game shutout of the Wildcats (5-3). The performance marked the second seven-inning, complete-game shutout of her career. Her last such outing came against Texas A&M at the 2023 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. Tinsley struck out a career-high nine batters, including back-to-back K's to end the game.
ย
Matching Tinsley inning-for-inning was Northwestern starter Ashley Miller who allowed four hits across six innings.
ย
UCLA got the hit it needed in the bottom of the sixth. Brady opened the inning with a double into right-center field. Grant hit a high fly ball into no-man's land that landed between Northwestern's right fielder and second baseman.
