Hoogmartens, Men's Tennis Beat USC 4-1 on Road

LOS ANGELES โ Alexander Hoogmartens and the UCLA men's tennis team beat crosstown rival USC 4-1 in a non-conference match Friday afternoon at David X. Marks Tennis Stadium. Hoogmartens clinched the overall victory and was also on court for the deciding doubles win.
The final point came by way of an ace, completing Hoogmartens' comeback from a lost first set. Also triumphant in singles play for the Bruins (8-6, 0-2 Pac-12) were Spencer Johnson and Jorge Plans Gonzalez. Johnson, like Hoogmartens, had a two-win day after also helping his team to the doubles point. Lodewijk Weststrate prevailed for the Trojans' (5-11, 0-1) lone point.
Weststrate won twice for USC, also teaming with Peter Makk to beat Timothy Li and Giacomo Revelli 6-2 on the top doubles court. UCLA's response started on Court 2, where Johnson and Emon van Loben Sels collected the first break of serve against Samuel Rubell and Niroop Vallabhaneni for 5-3. The Bruins held for the subsequent game and victory.
Court 3 also stayed on serve until late in the match. Hoogmartens and Govind Nanda finally broke through at 5-5 and went on to hold, narrowly defeating Volodymyr Iakubenko and Karl Lee.
Plans Gonzalez made his presence felt in singles play, controlling his first set with Vallabhaneni by a 6-1 score. A deuce point went the way of Vallabhaneni for 5-5 in the second, keeping his hopes alive. Plans Gonzalez seized the final two games, however, and win.
The Trojans momentarily cut their deficit in half when No. 122 Weststrate got past Revelli by a 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 margin on Court 2. Johnson outlasted No. 106 Iakubenko 7-6(5), 6-4 on the third court, though, sealing his win with an ace and bringing the score to 3-1.
With No. 28 Nanda nearing a victory of his own versus No. 73 Makk on Court 1, Hoogmartens provided the heroics. After taking just one first-set game on Court 4, he outlasted Lee in the other two for a 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 result.
UCLA returns to conference play Friday, April 5 at Oregon, with first serve scheduled for 1:30 p.m. PT. The Bruins then visit Washington Sunday, April 7 for a 1 p.m. start.
