Revelli Provides Heroics for No. 25 Men's Tennis in Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. โ No. 25 UCLA men's tennis outlasted Oregon 4-3 at the UO Student Tennis Courts Friday afternoon, as Giacomo Revelli prevailed in three sets to decide it.
Revelli seized the final three games to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. In a back-and-forth match, the Bruins (9-6, 1-2 Pac-12) held a 3-1 lead despite trailing after doubles play. Alexander Hoogmartens, Spencer Johnson and Jorge Plans Gonzalez also earned singles victories for UCLA. The Ducks (12-10, 1-3) pulled level after Ray Lo and Quinn Vandecasteele were triumphant.

The doubles tandem of Hoogmartens and Govind Nanda improved to 5-1 on Court 3 and 5-2 overall with its 6-2 win against Lachlan Robertson and Avi Shugar, but Oregon came out on top of the other two results. No. 41 Vandecasteele and Matthew Burton downed Revelli and Timothy Li 6-2 to start things off on Court 1 and Lo/Lenn Luemkemann got the better of Johnson and Emon van Loben Sels by another 6-2 score on 2.
The Bruins took three first sets and each of those matches soon turned into straight-set victories. Plans Gonzalez started a flurry of UCLA wins when he topped Shugar 6-2, 6-2 on Court 6. Plans Gonzalez has won four of his past five completed matches โ all on Court 6.
Next off his court was No. 120 Johnson. Making his first appearance as a nationally-ranked player โ and first on Court 2 in conference play โ he handled Breazu by a 6-2, 6-3 margin. The win was Johnson's team-high 20th of 2023-24. Hoogmartens capped the run on Court 4, where he held off Luemkemann 6-1, 6-4 for his third victory in a row.
Vandecasteele cut the Ducks' deficit in half when he beat No. 22 Nanda 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 on the top court. Gianluca Ballotta of the Bruins could not force a third set on Court 5, falling 6-4, 7-6(5) to Lo for the tying decision.
Revelli's second clinching win of the season came in a comeback. After forcing the third set with Burton on Court 3, Revelli looked for an opening. With the contest on serve at 3-3, he held. The difference-making break came for 5-3 and an overhead smash by Revelli at 40-30 of the ensuing game set off a celebration among his teammates.
UCLA finishes its road trip Sunday at Washington. First serve from Bill Quillian Tennis Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m. PT.
