Unreal Effort Leads UCLA to 1-0 Win at Cal Poly

San Luis Obispo, Calif. - Defender Lilly Reale did it all in UCLA's 1-0 victory at Cal Poly on Thursday night, scoring the game-winning goal in the 70th minute and leading the defense to a third consecutive shutout.

Reale, a two-time All-American and the 2022 Honda Award winner, won the ball in the back and dribbled up the field 85 yards towards goal. Her initial effort was smothered by the Cal Poly defense, but Reale quickly got back on her feet to regain possession and shoot far post with her left foot to score her first goal of the season and third of her career.
The Bruin defense, led by the center back Reale, held Cal Poly to six shots in the game and did not allow a shot on goal until the final minute, when goalkeeper Ryan Campbell saved a shot by Annika Smith to secure her third clean sheet in as many games.

Minutes before Reale's goal, freshman Avery Robinson nearly recorded the game's first score, but her shot hit the crossbar and bounced out of danger. Robinson's shot was one of 12 UCLA shots in the game. Freshman forward Jordan Geis was dangerous in attack, leading the Bruins with four shots. Two of her shots were saved by Cal Poly goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel, who finished with five saves overall.

Cal Poly had a good look at goal in the 50th minute, but a shot attempt by Kate Reedy was blocked by the Bruin defense, and in the 75th minute, Emily Lieber's shot missed just wide. UCLA freshman defender Nicki Fraser also intercepted a cross in front of the goal in the 81st minute to squash a potential scoring opportunity.

With the win, UCLA improves to 3-0 on the year, while Cal Poly falls to 0-2-1. The No. 6/4 Bruins will next face No. 11/23 Santa Clara at home on Sunday, Aug. 25 at 2pm.
