The Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad is the second consecutive podium meet for the Bruins, who opened at the American Gold Classic in Oceanside. The meet will be televised live on ESPN2. ย ย
BRUIN REUNIONS
Saturday's meet will match up Arkansas coaches Jordyn Wieber and Kyla Ross against their alma mater for the first time. Wieber spent six seasons on UCLA's staff - three as a student manager and three as a volunteer coach - before becoming the head coach at Arkansas in April of 2019. Ross joined the Arkansas staff as a volunteer coach in 2021-22 after completing her degree at UCLA and was promoted to assistant coach for the 2023 season. Wieber and Ross were teammates on the gold medal-winning 2012 U.S. Olympic team before going to UCLA. Wieber coached Ross at UCLA from 2017-19, and the two helped the Bruins win the 2018 NCAA title. Ross, a five-time NCAA champion, is UCLA's all-time leader in All-America honors with 24 and won the Honda Award in 2020.
UCLA graduate student Carissa Clay will be competing against her former team Kentucky. Clay was a four-year letterwinner for the Wildcats from 2021-24 and graduated from Kentucky last spring. She was accepted into UCLA's Graduate School of Education this summer and joined the Bruin squad in September. ย ย ย ย ย
UCLA GOES B1Gย
UCLA, who won 20 Pac-10/Pac-12 Gymnastics Championships between 1987-2024, enters its first year as a member of the Big Ten Conference. The Bruins will have their first official Big Ten competition next week at Maryland but will see their first Big Ten opponent this weekend at the Sprouts Collegiate Quad in a non-conference matchup against Ohio State. The Buckeyes finished fourth at the 2024 Big Ten Championships.
UCLA leads all Big Ten institutions with 124 NCAA Championships, seven coming from women's gymnastics. ย ย ย
LAST TIME OUTย
UCLA opened its season with a third-place finish at the American Gold Classic in Oceanside Jan. 4, scoring 195.250. California took first place with a 196.275, and No. 19 Oregon State was second with a 195.775. Two early falls on uneven bars in rotation put the Bruins in a hole early on, and although they kept pace with the other two teams on the final three events, including posting the highest mark on floor exercise, the low mark of 48.200 on bars was too much to overcome. UCLA had meet-winning routines from Olympians Jordan Chiles (9.900 on vault) and Brooklyn Moors (9.900 on floor exercise) and two other 9.900 scores from Chiles on uneven bars and fellow Olympian Emma Malabuyo on balance beam. Freshman Macy McGowan competed on three events and contributed three scores of 9.775 or higher, including a 9.850 on vault.
GOLDEN GIRL RETURNS ย
Olympic gold medalist and two-time Olympian Jordan Chiles made her much-anticipated return to UCLA after a one-year absence to train for the Olympics. Chiles, who rejoined the team on Dec. 14 after the fall quarter ended, has jumped right in with the Bruin squad, competing in three events in the season opener despite limited training time. She earned her first victory of the season with a first-place score of 9.900 on vault. She also posted a 9.900 on uneven bars to tie for third place and debuted a new floor routine that was finalized just that week and scored 9.775. During Chiles' last NCAA season in 2023, she captured the NCAA uneven bars and floor exercise titles and helped lead UCLA to a fifth-place NCAA finish and Pac-12 regular season co-championship.ย
GIMME MOORS ย
2020 Canadian Olympian Brooklyn Moors competed on three events for the first time since Feb. 27, 2022. The graduate student has been mostly a floor specialist the last two seasons while dealing with injuries but has come in strong for her final season, adding vault and beam back into her repertoire. Moors won floor exercise at the season opener with a 9.900 and scored 9.825 on just her second beam routine in three years. She currently ranks third in the nation on floor ย ย
BRUIN DEBUTS ย
Three Bruins made their collegiate debuts last week, with sophomore Sydney Barros and freshmen Macy McGowan and Mika Webster-Longin seeing action in the season opener. Barros, who had not competed in a year and a half after suffering a torn ACL in the summer of 2023, earned a spot in the lineup on uneven bars and contributed a 9.550. McGowan had a strong first meet, earning Top 10 finishes on all three events on which she competed, scoring 9.850 on vault, 9.800 on bars and 9.775 on floor. Webster-Longin showed all four events, competing on vault and floor and performing exhibition routines on bars and beam. She produced UCLA's second-highest mark on floor with a 9.825 and added a 9.775 on her exhibition bars. ย ย ย ย

UCLA has seven gymnasts ranked in the Top 25 of the week one national rankings, which are based on average score. Jordan Chiles is Top 10 on vault (ninth) and bars (seventh). Katelyn Rosen began her career hitting her first 42 routines before a fluke fall on bars in the Bruins' last meet a year ago. ย ย ย ย
