Men's Tennis Wraps Up First Day of NCAA Individuals
November 18, 2025 | Men's Tennis
ORLANDO, Fla. โ Spencer Johnson and Rudy Quan of the UCLA men's tennis team were outlasted on the first day of 2025 NCAA Division I Singles and Doubles Championships, suffering three-set singles losses at the USTA National Campus. Their stays are not over, however, as both will compete in the doubles draw.
In a matchup of preseason top-20 standouts, No. 19 Johnson fell to No. 15 Martin Borisiouk of NC State 6-2, 6-7(4), 7-6(1). Borisiouk will next face Arizona's Filip Gustafsson. The loss gave Johnson a 5-3 record for the fall. He entered NCAA play riding a five-match winning stream that included his bid-earning ITA Southwest Regional Championships final-round trip.
Quan, who also reached the ITA Southwest Regional Championships final to qualify, was defeated by No. 103 William Jansen. Jansen prevailed by a 6-7(5), 4-6, 6-2 score to set up a meeting with Aidan Kim of Ohio State. The singles loss was Quan's first of the fall. He will enter dual-match play with a 5-1 mark.
Times were released Tuesday for Wednesday's first round of doubles competition. Quan and Aadarsh Tripathi will try to take down top-seeded Petar Jovanovic/Benito Sanchez Martinez of Mississippi State at 1 p.m. PT. Johnson and Emon van Loben Sels face off with Chris Xu/Niels Ratiu of North Carolina at 4 p.m. PT.
