LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's volleyball team fell 3-0 to No. 1 Long Beach State on Wednesday night inside Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
Cooper Robinson led all players in points and kills with 17.5 points and 16 kills on the night. Andrew Rowan added 31 assists, while also leading the Bruins in digs with six on the evening.
Cameron Thorne added a pair of blocks for the Bruins (6-3), who despite the loss hit .361 for the match with Robinson leading the way hitting .542 for the day.
The Beach (10-0) and Bruins traded points throughout the first half of the opening set, with neither team taking more than a two-point advantage. Rama got the Bruins within one, 10-9, before the Bruins tied it up at 12-12 courtesy of a Beach service error.
Two big blocks for the Bruins put UCLA up a pair, 17-15, with Thorne finishing off the second of the two. Unfortunately for the Bruins, the Beach rallied and took the second set 25-23. Robinson led all attackers with eight kills in the opening frame.
As for the second set Long Beach opened up a 7-2 lead before the Bruins clawed their way back into it. Sean McQuiggan made his return from injury in the match, and hammered home a kill to make it 11-8 in favor of LBSU before two Beach aces put Long Beach up 16-11.
Later on in the set Robinson recorded another kill to make it 24-19 before Long Beach took the second set 25-19 on the next play, and took a 2-0 lead into the third set.
In the third set UCLA took an early 5-3 lead courtesy of Robinson at the service line, recording an ace.
Long Beach fought their way back throughout the set and eventually tied it at 18-18. The Beach then went on a 3-0 scoring run to take a 21-19 lead before McQuiggan answered for UCLA with his third kill of the match to make it 21-20.
Unfortunately for UCLA, that would be as close as the Bruins would get before the Beach earned the set and match a few points later, 25-23, and won 3-0 on Wednesday night.
Up Next: UCLA returns to action on Wednesday, February 19, taking on UC Irvine in Irvine, California. First serve is set for F6 pm from the Bren Events Center.
