Cholowsky's Grand Slam Propels Bruins to 8-4 Win Over Arizona State

LOS ANGELES – Roch Cholowsky's fourth-inning grand slam and the bullpen's late-inning dominance propelled the UCLA baseball team to its third consecutive victory, defeating Arizona State 8-4 on Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
UCLA (7-1) leveraged two home runs to fuel a pair of four-run innings, scoring four runs in the second and four more in the fourth, to secure a victory over Arizona State (6-2).
Cholowsky continued his blistering start to the season by blasting a grand slam for the second consecutive game. Through eight games, the Arizona native is hitting .429 with three home runs and 14 RBI.
Dean West provided the other crucial swing for UCLA, a two-run shot in the second inning. UCLA's leadoff hitter scored two runs in his 1-for-3 day.
Logan de Groot was the lone Bruin with a multi-hit day, going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and one RBI.
UCLA's bullpen arms accounted for 4.2 innings after starting pitcher Wylan Moss was chased out of the game. The relieving crew limited the Sun Devils to just one run over 4.2 innings, allowing just three hits and a walk.
Jack O'Connor earned his first career win after his 2.0 innings of scoreless ball. Chris Grothues and Justin Lee also contributed solid innings on the bump, rounding out the bullpen's impressive performance.
Arizona State jumped out to an early lead in its first trip to the plate, banging out a pair of two-out hits to plate the first run of the ballgame.
UCLA replied with four runs in the second frame to seize the lead. AJ Salgado drew a leadoff walk and promptly swiped second base before Jarrod Hocking's hard-hit grounder was booted by the ASU first baseman, putting runners at the corners for Cashel Dugger. The Bruins' catcher laid down a well-placed bunt to bring Salgado home, evening the contest at 1-1.
Logan de Groot prolonged the inning by legging out an infield hit to score Hocking, and West followed with a two-run bomb, jumping on a 2-0 offering and launching it over the right-field wall.
The visitors answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third when Jacob Tobias lifted a high fly ball to center field that became lost in the night sky and fell in for a two-RBI double, trimming the UCLA advantage to one.
Base hits from Dugger and de Groot followed by a hit-by-pitch from West loaded the bases for Cholowsky in the UCLA fourth. UCLA's shortstop punished a hanging breaking ball from his high school teammate, Rohan Lettow, blasting it over the wall in left-center field for his second grand slam in as many games. Grothues relieved starting pitcher Moss with one out in the fifth inning. The left hander immediately picked a runner off first base and fanned the next hitter to get out of the jam. Moss lasted 4.1 innings, surrendering three runs on three hits while striking out four.
