UCLA Falls to No. 14 Vanderbilt, 8-3
February 28, 2025 | Baseball
UCLA (7-3) fell behind early after Vanderbilt (9-1) scored four runs in the first inning and never managed to regain any offensive momentum. The Bruins were limited to just three hits, marking a season-low.
First-inning home runs by Brodie Johnston and Mac Rose set the stage for an offense that racked up nine hits, including five for extra bases.
UCLA's bullpen was a standout in the defeat, delivering seven scoreless innings while keeping the Commodores off the board for six consecutive frames. The Bruins' relievers allowed only two hits.
CJ Bott had the longest outing, facing just one batter over the minimum and striking out two in his two innings of work. Josh Alger recorded five outs, with his only blemish being a single walk. Kaena Kiakona pitched a scoreless ninth inning, marking back-to-back scoreless outings for the left-hander.
Mulivai Levu smacked a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth for his third homer of the year while Jarrod Hocking and Cameron Kim were the only other Bruins to tally a hit in the contest.
The Commodores took control early with back-to-back home runs in their first trip to the plate. Johnson launched a three-run homer and Rose followed with a solo shot, quickly making it a 4-0 ballgame.
UCLA responded with two runs in the home half of the second inning. Roman Martin started the rally with a leadoff walk and Jarrod Hocking ripped a double down the left-field line to set the table.
Payton Brennan scampered to first base on a dropped third strike to load the bases with no-outs, then Kim lifted a sacrifice fly to score Martin from third base. The Bruins utilized some small ball when Cashel Dugger laid down a well-executed safety squeeze to score Hocking, cutting the lead in half.
Vanderbilt immediately answered with four runs on four hits in the top of the third, extending its lead to six. This chased starting pitcher Cody Delvecchio (0-2) out of the game. The right hander lasted two innings, allowing seven hits and eight earned runs.
The bats went quiet for four consecutive frames as neither team was able to find any rhythm at the plate. The UCLA bullpen limited the Commodores to just two hits over five straight innings.
After Hocking's double in the second, the Bruins went hitless for the next five frames. Levu finally broke the dry spell with his solo home run in the bottom of the eighth, blasting a 437-foot home run over the right-field wall.
The Southern California College Baseball Classic continues tomorrow when the Bruins square off with UConn tomorrow at 2 p.m. PT. Ian May is slated to get the start on the mound for UCLA. The game will be available for viewing on B1G+.
