Woolery Homers Three Times in Two Wins on Friday
February 28, 2025 | Softball
FULLERTON, Calif. โ Junior first baseman Jordan Woolery homered three times in the No. 4 UCLA softball team's two victories over Utah and Cal State Fullerton at the Judi Garman Classic on Friday.
ย
The Bruins (17-3) defeated the Utes, 16-4, in six innings and followed with a 6-2 win over the Titans in the evening. Woolery recorded the second two-homer game of her career in game one against Utah with deep drives to left field in the first and sixth innings. She padded the lead in game two versus the Titans with her team-leading ninth homer of the year in the fifth inning.
ย
Woolery also leads UCLA in batting average (.414), runs batted in (28) and slugging percentage (1.017).
ย
"I feel like we just came out swinging today," Woolery said postgame. "Yesterday, we were off to a slow start, but today, I think we stuck to our gameplan well. Coach Will (Oldham) and Bubba (Nickles-Camarena) had us right in the dugout and we were able to execute."
ย
Game One โ UCLA 16, Utah 4 (6 inn.)
The Bruins' 16 runs against the Utes (4-14) were their most in a game since March 4, 2023 when UCLA matched that total against Cal Poly. UCLA hit around the battling lineup twice in the first and sixth innings.
ย
Five total Bruins notched multiple hits, led by freshmen Kaniya Bragg and Rylee Slimp who recorded three apiece.
ย
UCLA put up seven runs through the first two innings. Senior Savannah Pola plated the first run of the game on a single to center field after leadoff hitter Jessica Clements singled and advanced on a wild pitch to open the game. Woolery brought home Pola on the first of her three homers of the day to give the Bruins a 3-0 lead just one out into the contest.
ย
UCLA chased Utah starting pitcher Shelbee Jones out of the game after a walk to Bragg and base hit by Slimp. Utes reliever Taylor Jacobs walked two of the first three batters she faced, pushing across the Bruins' fourth and final run of the first inning.
ย
Megan Grant launched her fifth homer of the year โ a two-run blast to right field โ to spark the scoring in the second inning. Once again, Bragg and Slimp continued the offensive onslaught with a double and single, respectively. One more freshman, Sofia Mujica, singled and knocked in Bragg from third base to stretch the margin to 7-0.
ย
Freshman Addisen Fisher earned the start in the circle for UCLA and finished her complete-game outing with four strikeouts and three earned runs. Fisher improved her record to a perfect 6-0 to start her collegiate career.
ย
Woolery sparked the Bruins' second offensive surge in the sixth with a homer off the first pitch she saw to lead off the inning. In total, UCLA tallied nine runs off six hits, two walks and one error in the frame. Junior utility Rylee Pinedo saw the first action of her career in left field and at the plate on Friday. Pinedo recorded her first career hit and RBI in her first plate appearance in a Bruin uniform in the sixth inning.
ย
Game Two โ UCLA 6, Cal State Fullerton 2
Junior starting pitcher Taylor Tinsley struck out 13 batters in the Bruins' second win of the day. Tinsley now has five career double-digit strikeout performances, including two this season with 13-plus K's. The Lawrenceville, Ga. product retired the first nine batters she faced, including seven by way of strikeout, to open the night cap.
ย
UCLA pounced early again in game two with five runs in the second inning. After a two-RBI single by shortstop Seneca Curo, Clements homered for a second straight day with a three-run blast to right center. Clements entered the year with six homers over her three previous at Cal Poly.
ย
The Titans (12-7) scored their only two runs in the fourth inning on a double by Nataly Lozano and single by Ava Arce in back-to-back at-bats. Tinsley kept Cal State Fullerton at bay for the remainder of the game, twice stranding two runners on base in the fifth and sixth innings.
ย
Woolery accounted for UCLA's final run on a solo shot to straightaway center.
