UCLA Tops No. 18 UC Irvine, 11-4

March 11, 2025 | Baseball

LOS ANGELES โ€“ย The UCLA baseball team secured its first ranked win of the season by defeating No. 18 UC Irvine, 11-4, on Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
ย
UCLA (13-4, 2-1 Big Ten) snapped a seven-game losing streak against the Anteaters (11-5, 2-1 Big West), earning its first win over UC Irvine since Feb. 28, 2021.
ย
The Bruins broke the game open with five runs in its first trip to the plate, sparked by home runs from Mulivai Levu and Payton Brennan.
ย
Levu collected three RBIs in his 3-for-4 night at the plate while Brennan also drove in three runs during his two-hit performance.
ย
UCLA capitalized on hits from Dean West and Roman Martin, along with a series of walks, to push four runs across in the fifth inning and gain a 10-run cushion.
ย
West banged out a pair of hits, drew a walk, and recorded a stolen base in a productive night for UCLA's lead off hitter. Roch Cholowsky reached base every time he came to the plate, going 1-for-1 with three hit-by-pitches and a walk.
ย
In UCLA's explosive first inning, Levu launched a fly ball down the left-field line that drifted over the wall for a two-run shot, bringing in Cholowsky, who had started the inning with a base hit. Martin and Blake Balsz then drew consecutive walks to set the stage for Brennan, who smacked a 107-mph line drive that cleared the wall in left-center field for a three-run homer. This extended the Bruins' lead to 5-0 after one frame.
ย
Wylan Moss was relieved with two outs in the top of the third inning after reaching the 40-pitch mark. The freshman departed after posting a solid line, surrendering just two hits in 2.2 scoreless innings of work.
ย
AJ Salgado's RBI ground out plated a run in the third, then UCLA scored four more runs in the fifth to make it a double-digit advantage.
ย
The Bruins' rally took place all with two outs. Salgado reached base after being hit by a pitch, and Cashel Dugger followed with a four-pitch walk. West battled in a two-strike count before slapping a base hit through the left side to score Salgado. Cholowskyย drew a bases-loaded walk to plate another run, and Martin capped the four-run frame for UCLA with a line drive to right field, driving in two more.
ย
Ian May (2-1) was the first man out of the bullpen, coming on for his first relief appearance as a Bruin. The left-hander faced just one batter over the minimum in his 2.1 innings on the mound, holding the Anteaters hitless during his outing. May earned his second win of the season on Tuesday night.
ย
UC Irvine's offense finally showed some life when it pushed three runs across in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to seven.
ย
Luke Rodriguez escaped a bases-loaded jam in the seventh, punching out First Team All-Big West recipient Anthony Martinez and inducing a ground out to leave the inning unscathed. In the eighth, Rodriguez maneuvered out of yet another situation with the bases juiced to keep the Anteaters off the board. The Shafter, Calif.ย native registered 1.2 innings pitched without allowing a run, striking out three.
ย
UC Irvine mustered one run in the ninth, but Justin Lee registered the last three outs of the contest to clinch the victory for UCLA.
ย
The Bruins will remain at Jackie Robinson Stadium for their first-ever Big Ten Conference home series when they host Nebraska starting on Friday, March 14 at 6 p.m. PT. The game will be available to watch on B1G+.
