Bruins Secure Series-Opening Win Over Nebraska, 5-2

March 14, 2025 | Baseball

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA baseball team secured a series-opening victory over Nebraska,5-2, on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

UCLA (14-4, 3-1 Big Ten) extends its winning streak to three games and has now won seven of its last eight contests.

Payton Brennan enjoyed a standout performance by scoring the game's first run after his double in the second, then blasted a solo home run in the fourth to extend the Bruins' lead. This was his third big fly of the year.

Despite receiving the no-decision, UCLA received a spectacular start from Cody Delvecchio on Friday night. The right hander kept the Cornhuskers (7-9, 1-3 Big Ten) off the board during his five innings on the mound, fanning five batters and walking just one.

Cameron Kim also banged out a pair of hits for his third multi-hit game of the season.

UCLA got started in the bottom of the second when Brennan smashed a double into the gap, setting the stage for Kim's two-out single that drove in the centerfielder.

Brennan did more damage in the bottom of the fourth when his opposite field solo shot doubled the UCLA lead.

Delvecchio departed after five scoreless innings in what was his best start of the season. The junior righty struck out five batters and walked just one in his excellent outing.

Nebraska leveled the contest with Tyler Stone's two-run homer in the top of the sixth, tagging relief pitcher Jack O'Connor for a pair of runs shortly after he entered the game.

UCLA restored its lead after the seventh-inning stretch by rallying for three runs. Kim ignited the rally with an infield hit before Cashel Dugger and Dean West followed with a pair of free passes to load the bases. Roch Cholowsky then lifted a sacrifice fly to bring in the first run of the inning, then Mulivai Levu ripped a sharp grounder through the right side to score another run. West capped he three-run inning for the Bruins by dashing home on a wild pitch.

UCLA received a stellar performance from Ian May (3-1) out of the bullpen as the left hander allowed just one hit and one walk in his 1.2 scoreless innings of work. The transfer from California earned his third win of the year.

The Bruins escaped a chaotic ninth inning after a passed ball on a strikeout allowed Nebraska to get its first base runner of the inning. A base hit put runners at first and second, but Justin Lee came up with a clutch pitch in a full count, spinning a backdoor breaking ball on the outside corner to get the batter looking and record the second out of the inning.

Lee then clinched victory for UCLA by executing a perfect pick-off play at first base to nab the game's final out and his first save of the year.

The Bruins will take on Nebraska in game two of the series tomorrow at 2 p.m. PT. Michael Barnett is scheduled to make his first start of the season for UCLA. The game will be available to watch on B1G+.
