UCLA Completes Sweep Over Nebraska with 5-3 Victory

March 16, 2025 | Baseball

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA baseball team completed the three-game sweep over Nebraska with a 5-3 victory on Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

UCLA (16-4, 5-1 Big Ten) has won five consecutive games and nine of its last ten. The sweep of Nebraska (7-11, 1-5 Big Ten) marks the Bruins' second straight series win. UCLA has secured at least two out of three games each weekend this season.

The Bruins collect their 16th win of the year, equaling their impressive 16-4 start in the 2023 season.

Roch Cholowsky and Jarrod Hocking electrified the offense with their solo home runs on Sunday afternoon. Cholowsky compiled a two-hit day while hitting his seventh home run of the campaign. Hocking also enjoyed a 2-for-4 performance, smashing his first big fly of the year.

Dean West provided a pivotal swing in the fifth inning with a game-tying two-RBI single. UCLA's leadoff hitter went 1-for-3 and drew a walk to reach base twice on the day.

UCLA's bullpen was outstanding on Sunday afternoon, holding the Cornhuskers scoreless through five complete innings. Jack O'Connor (2-0) was credited with the win while excellent relief showings from Ian May, Wylan Moss, and Justin Lee helped the Bruins preserve a late lead in the series finale.

Landon Stump struck out the first four batters he faced, but ran into some trouble when the Cornhuskers tagged him for a pair of runs in the second and added one more in the third to build an early lead.

UCLA struggled to find rhythm at the plate in the early stages, managing only one hit through the first three frames. Cholowsky ignited the offense by attacking the first pitch of the fourth inning, smacking a solo shot over the left-field wall for his seventh homer of the year.

The Bruins rallied for two more runs in the fifth to tie the ballgame at 3-3. Blake Balsz was plunked to lead off the inning, then AJ Salgado followed by roping a base hit up the middle and both runners advanced into scoring position after the ball was mishandled by the Nebraska centerfielder. West then deposited a base hit into centerfield, a game-tying two-RBI single, which forced starting pitcher Jackson Brockett out of the game.

Hocking's solo homer to lead off the sixth gave UCLA its first lead of the contest, then Balsz made it a two-run advantage with his RBI base hit through the left side.

UCLA's bullpen kept the Nebraska offense in check for the remainder of the contest, combining for five innings of scoreless ball.

May impressed in his second appearance of the weekend and the third of week, facing just one batter over the minimum in his 1.2 scoreless inning. O'Connor earned his second win of the season and Moss danced around a couple hits to get the Bruins through the seventh and eighth frames.

Lee earned his second save of the series after a perfect ninth inning, fanning two of the three batters he faced.

The Bruins will return to Jackie Robinson Stadium on Friday, March 21 at 6 p.m. PT where they will host Indiana for the opening game of a three-game series. The games will be available to watch on B1G+.
