UCLA Falls to Indiana in Series Opener, 5-1

March 21, 2025 | Baseball

LOS ANGELES โ€“ย The UCLA baseball team's five-game winning streak came to an end with a 5-1 defeat to Indiana in the series opener on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
ย
UCLA (16-5, 5-2 Big Ten) was unable to find rhythm at the plate, mustering just four hits in the contest.
ย
All the runs in the game came from home runs, as the Hoosiers (13-9, 5-2 Big Ten) launched three big flies to quickly establish a 5-0 lead by the end of the fourth inning.
ย
Indiana set the tone with a two-run homer in the top of the first inning, followed by a solo shot in the third, and capped off their scoring with another two-run blast in the fourth.
ย
Mulivai Levu smacked his eighth homer of the season, ascending into the team lead.
ย
Starting pitcher Cody Delvecchio (0-3) had the longest outing of his career on Friday night, pitching 6.1 innings. The right-hander allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits while striking out six. This was the deepest any UCLA starter had pitched into a game this season.
ย
Indiana struck in its first trip when Devin Taylor launched a two-run home run. The Hoosiers added to their lead in the third when Korbyn Dickerson homered to center field, then Tyler Cerny mashed a two-run bomb in the fourth to make it a 5-0 advantage.
ย
In the bottom of the fifth, the Bruins had a promising opportunity to claw back into the ballgame after placing runners at the corners and no outs. However, they were unable to capitalize, as back-to-back strikeouts followed by a fly out ended the threat.
ย
UCLA's offense showed its first sign of life when Levu lifted a no-doubt home run to right field to reduce the deficit to four runs. However, the Bruins only managed one hit over the last three innings.
Ian May and Jack O'Connor were solid out of the bullpen, keeping the Hoosiers off the board through a combined 2.2 innings.
ย
The Bruins will return to Jackie Robinson Stadium on tomorrow at 2 p.m. PT for the middle game of the series against Indiana. Michael Barnett is scheduled to make his second start of the season for UCLA. The game will be available to watch on B1G+.
