Cholowsky Powers UCLA to 5-1 Win Over USC

LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA baseball team closed out the Southern California College Baseball Classic with a 5-1 win over crosstown rival USC on Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Roch Cholowsky homered twice and added four RBIs to lead UCLA's (9-3) offense. Cholowsky now has four multi-homer games in his career.
Michael Barnett (3-0) recorded his third win of the year as the Bruins held the Trojans (9-2) to just one run on the day. ย
The Bruins took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Salgado beat out an infield single, allowing Payton Brennan to score from third.
The Bruins kept the Trojans off the board in dramatic fashion in the top of the fourth. With a runner on second base, USC's Augie Lopez sent a ball to center field that one-hopped the wall. Brennan tracked down the ball and threw it to Phoenix Call near second base, who then fired it to Cashel Dugger. Dugger then applied the tag to the USC runner to end the inning and preserve UCLA's 1-0 lead.ย ย
With one out in the top of the fifth, Stump was relieved by Barnett. Stump finished his day with no runs given up, two strikeouts, five hits allowed, and induced two key double plays to keep the Trojans off the board.
Barnett then got back-to-back strikeouts to keep the Bruins up 1-0 heading to the bottom of the fifth.
In the bottom half of the frame, with two outs and two runners on, Cholowskyย hit a three-run blast overย left-center field walll to extend the Bruins' lead to 4-0.
USC scratched their first run across in the top of the sixth. John Elliot singled up the middle scoring Lopez, and made it a 4-1 UCLA advantage.
Cholowsky immediately responded for UCLA in the bottom of the seventh inning. The 2024 Perfect Game All-American hammered his second home run of the game to left field, this one a solo shot, to put the Bruins up four, 5-1. UCLA's shortstop now holds the team lead in home runs with five on the year.
The Bruins' pitching staff stiffened in the closing stages,ย holding their crosstown rivals scoreless over the last two frames to earn the 5-1 win on Sunday afternoon. Brennan robbed an extra base hit in the bottom of the ninth with a full-extension diving play to get the first out of the inning. Justin Lee showed some excellent composure with a pair of runners on base, fanning the last two hittersย clinch the victory for UCLA.
Stump, Barnett, andย Lee combined to throw nine innings of one-run ball while striking out eight batters, and allowing just four walks.
The Bruins return to action on Tuesday, March 4, when the Michigan Wolverines come to Jackie Robinson Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 5 pm PT and will be broadcast on B1G+.
