No. 10 UCLA Evens Series Against Washington with 7-3 Win
April 12, 2025 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES -ย The No. 10-ranked UCLA baseball team evened the weekend series against Washington by taking the middle game, 7-3, on Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
ย
UCLA (27-7, 11-3 Big Ten) collected 11 hits as a team and saw five players record multi-hit games in an impressive offensive effort.
ย
Dean West extended his hitting streak to 10 games, continuing to wreak havoc in the leadoff spot for UCLA. The Woodland Hills native went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks, two RBIs, and a couple runs scored.
ย
Roch Cholowsky provided the biggest swing of the day, a two-run homer in the fourth inning to highlight his two-hit performance at the plate.
ย
Mulivai Levu, Roman Martin, and Jarrod Hocking also enjoyed two hit days in the contest.
ย
Michael Barnett (7-0) picked up his league-best seventh win of the campaign after a solid outing to get the Bruins back in the win column. The righty surrendered just two earned runs over five innings while striking out two.
ย
Washington struck first in the top of the second, using a pair of hits to plate the first run of the ballgame. UCLA immediately answered in the bottom half of the frame when West drew a free pass with the bases-loaded to even the contest at 1-1.
ย
The Bruins added to their lead with four runs in the fourth after loading the bases with no outs. Phoenix Call plated the first run of the inning despite grounding into a double play, then West followed by ripping a single through the left side for a two-out RBI knock. Cholowsky then stepped to the plate and ambushed the first pitch he saw, launching it over the wall in left-center field for a two-run bomb. This was the first hit of the weekend for UCLA's shortstop.
ย
Casen Taggert got a run back for the Huskies with a solo shot in the top of the fifth.
ย
Martin extended the lead when he poked a base hit through the right side to spark UCLA's two-run sixth. AJ Salgado brought the second run around to score by lifting a deep fly ball to left field, plating Cholowsky from third base with the sacrifice fly.
ย
In the eighth inning, Salgado came up with defensive play of the day, leaping at the center-field wall to rob Malakhi Knight of a home run. Washington managed to still get a run back in the inning, however, when Sam DeCarlo hit a solo home run to bring the Huskies within four. This was the only blemish in Ian May's outing as the left hander allowed just one hit over three innings.
ย
Easton Hawk tossed a scoreless ninth, inducing a 6-4-3 game-ending double play to clinch the middle game for UCLA.
ย
The Bruins return to Jackie Robinson Stadium for the series finale tomorrow at 1 p.m. PT. The game will be available to watch on B1G+.
