No. 10 UCLA Clinches Series Win Over Washington with 13-9 Victory

April 13, 2025 | Baseball

LOS ANGELES - The No. 10-ranked UCLA baseball team clinched a series win over Washington with its 13-9 victory in the rubber match on Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Roch Cholowsky headlined a massive 13-run effort for UCLA (28-7, 12-3 Big Ten) by hitting his team-best 11thhome run of the season in his 4-for-5 performance at the plate. The 2024 Freshman All-American racked up five RBI while hitting three doubles in addition to his third-inning homer. UCLA's shortstop has now ascended into the team lead for big flies.

Despite a setback against Washington (18-19, 9-6 Big Ten) in Friday's season opener, the Bruins bounced back to win games two and three of the series. This victory marked their 10th consecutive winning weekend, a streak that dates back to the 2024 season. UCLA remains unbeaten in weekend series this year.

Five Bruins enjoyed multi-hit days at the plate. Roman Martin mashed his second homer of the campaign in a 2-for-4 performance while Jarrod Hocking and Blake Balsz also tallied two hits in the contest.

Dean West went 2-for-4 with four runs scored and two walks to extend his hitting streak to 11 games as UCLA's leadoff hitter continues to dazzle at the top of the Bruins' order.

Chris Grothues (1-0) returned from injury and came up with a huge stop out of the bullpen, recording back-to-back strikeouts to leave the bases loaded in the fifth. The left hander picked up his first career win.

After two straight hitless frames, the Huskies pushed three runs across in the top of the third to take an early lead. Sam DeClaro smacked a home run that snuck over the right field wall for a two-run shot to spark the three-run inning for the visitors.

UCLA answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 3-3. Cholowsky launched a fly ball that just drifted over the left-field wall to lead off the three-run rally. Hocking and Balsz followed by delivering two-out RBI base hits to even the contest after three frames.

The Bruins surged into the lead with three more runs in their next trip to the plate. UCLA loaded the bases with no outs after back-to-back walks were issued to Grant Gray and Dean West before Cholowsky was hit by a pitch.

Mulivai Levu lifted a fly ball to left field for a sacrifice fly to plate the first run of the frame, then Washington elected to intentionally walk AJ Salgado to load the bases for Hocking. The Anaheim Hills made the most of the opportunity and laced a line drive into right-center field to bring two runs around to score, extending the Bruins' lead to three.

UCLA posted its third consecutive three-spot in the fifth inning when Cholowsky ripped a double down the left-field line to score West, then Martin demolished a 2-2 offering for a two-run blast, making it nine unanswered runs.

Washington rallied for three runs in the seventh to end its scoreless spell, but UCLA immediately replied after the seventh-inning stretch when Cholowsky roped another RBI double into the left-field corner. Salgado's grounder found its way through the UW first baseman to plate another run, capping the two-run seventh.

In the eighth, Cholowsky remained scorching hot by launching a two-RBI double into the left-center gap, giving UCLA a seven-run cushion in the ninth.

The Huskies mustered three runs in their last trip to the plate, but UCLA held on to secure its first series win over Washington since 2019.

The Bruins return to Jackie Robinson Stadium on Tuesday, April 15 at 6 p.m. PT to host No. 8 Oregon State. The game will be available to watch on Big Ten Network.
