Bruins Blast Five Homers to Clinch Sweep Over No. 12 USC, 10-4
April 05, 2026 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES โ The No.ย 1-ranked UCLA baseball team completed a three-game sweep of No.ย 12 USC with a 10-4 win in Sunday's series finale at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
ย
The Bruins (29-2, 15-0 Big Ten) pushed their winning streak to 23 games, establishing a new program record. UCLA has now swept five straight conference series, the first time in school history the Bruins have accomplished that feat.
ย
The Bruins blasted five home runs on the day, highlighted by Mulivai Levu's two-homer performance. The UCLA first baseman went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored, pushing his season total to nine home runs.
ย
Roch Cholowsky added a three-hit day of his own, launching his 11th home run of the season. Dean West opened the scoring with a leadoff blast, his third of the year, and Will Gasparino later joined the power surge with his 13th homer.
ย
Payton Brennan capped an incredible weekend by posting his third straight three-hit game. He finished the series on a tear, going 9-for-13 with a home run, six RBIs, and four runs scored in the sweep.
ย
The UCLA bullpen dominated the late innings, holding USC to just two hits and one run over the final five frames. Chris Grothues (1-0) earned his first win of the season, and Zach Strickland shined brightest, striking out three across two scoreless innings to finish the game and lock down the first save of his career.
ย
West put UCLA on the board in the top of the first, launching a leadoff home run that slammed off the top of the hitting facility in right field. It marked the third homer of the season for the Bruins' left fielder.
ย
The Trojans got a run back in the second when Augie Lopez drilled a solo home run to even the score.
ย
UCLA regained the lead in the third when Gasparino drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Cholowsky, who had opened the inning with a single through the left side.
ย
USC reclaimed the lead in the fifth when a throwing error allowed two runs to score.
ย
UCLA answered with three runs in the home half of the inning, using home runs from Levu and Gasparino to take the advantage. Levu opened the frame by unloading on a no-doubt solo shot off the hitting facility in right. Martin followed with a single through the right side, and Gasparino stayed on a slider and hooked it over the left-field wall for a two-run homer to cap the three-run inning.
ย
The Trojans scratched across a run in the top of the sixth, but UCLA answered right back in the home half as Levu launched his second homer of the day, a laser that cleared the wall in left-center, to restore a three-run cushion.
ย
In the eighth, UCLA found itself in trouble after a walk and a double put runners on second and third with one out. Strickland came up huge, striking out back-to-back hitters to escape the jam and preserve the lead.
ย
The Bruins put the game out of reach in the bottom half, as Cholowsky crushed a three-run homer off the batter's eye in center to break it open.
ย
Strickland returned for the ninth and slammed the door, retiring the side in order to secure the sweep.
ย
UCLA now heads to Cal State Fullerton for a Tuesday, April 7 midweek matchup, with live coverage on ESPN+.
