Women's Tennis Upsets No. 15 Vanderbilt in NCAA Second Round

May 03, 2025 | Women's Tennis

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The UCLA women's tennis team survived one of its biggest tests of the season in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, overcoming No. 15-seed Vanderbilt, 4-3 in a thriller at the Lummis Tennis Center in Nashville, Tenn. With the win, the Bruins advance to next week's Super Regionals where they will meet No. 2-seed and defending NCAA Champion Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.

With the dual match knotted a 3-3, the result hinged on a tight battle between UCLA's Ahmani Guichard and Vanderbilt's Sophia Webster at Court 5. The two players split sets, sending the match to a decisive third set where Guichard found her back against the wall down 5-3. She managed to gain the break back, eventually pushing the deciding set to a tiebreaker. Despite facing a pair of match points down 4-6 in the breaker Guichard took control, winning the final four points of the match to take a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(6) victory and send UCLA into next week's Super Regionals.

"Just a super competitive match," said UCLA head coach Stella Sampras Webster. "Vanderbilt has had a great season. We knew going in that it was just going to come down to points and it came down to the last match and a tiebreaker in the third. Doubles was a big point for us. Overall we had to play well. People stepped up at different spots including Ahmani. I'm really proud of her. She's had an up-and-down season but for her to clinch it with this pressure, she did a great job. Kimmi (Hance) and Elise (Wagle), our seniors who have been so solid this year, they really kept us in it. Yeah, I think that doubles point was just huge for us."

In addition to Guichard, Hance and Wagle were big for the Bruins on the day. They started the afternoon by upsetting the No. 9-ranked pair of Celia-Belle Mohr and Webster, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Wagle then posted a straight-set victory over Bridget Stammel at court No. 3, while Hance lost her first set against Valeria Ray at court No. 2 before storming back for a 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-0 win.

Not only did Guichard clinch the victory in singles, her 7-5 win with Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer at Court 3 doubles clinched that pivotal point for the Bruins.
