No. 1 UCLA Blasts UC Irvine, 11-1
March 10, 2026 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES โ The No. 1-ranked UCLA baseball team rolled to a dominant 11-1 run-rule victory over UC Irvine on Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
ย
The Bruins (14-2, 3-0 Big Ten) exploded for nine runs in the first inning to burst into the lead, and later added two more to invoke the 10-run rule, ending the game after seven innings. The win marks UCLA's eighth straight.
ย
Cashel Dugger highlighted the offense with a grand slam as part of a two-hit day, while Roch Cholowsky added a three-run shot for his ninth homer of the season. Dean West, Mulivai Levu, Roman Martin, and Phoenix Call also turned in multi-hit performances to power the Bruins' offensive onslaught.
ย
Angel Cervantes (1-0) delivered his best outing as a Bruin, earning his first career win with three perfect innings. He retired all nine batters he faced and struck out two in a dominant effort on the mound.
ย
UCLA sent 15 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first, ripping seven hits, including two homers, to erupt for nine runs and seize control early. Cholowsky opened the inning with a walk, Levu doubled, and Martin cashed them both in with a single through the right side. Brennan reached on an error and Gasparino was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Dugger, who lifted a deep fly that just cleared the wall in left for a grand slam.
ย
The rally kept rolling as Call drilled a single up the middle and West worked a walk, setting the table for Cholowsky again. This time, he jumped on a hanging breaker and lined it over the left-field wall for a three-run shot to cap the nine-run outburst.
ย
West ripped a single through the right side in the second, driving in another run and pushing the lead to double digits.
ย
UC Irvine loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth, but the Bruins limited the damage to just one run. Zach Strickland, who came on in relief, fanned a pair to get out of the jam.
ย
UCLA restored its 10-run lead in the bottom half of the inning when Cholowsky lifted a sacrifice fly to score Call, who had opened the frame with a double off the center-field wall.
ย
The Bruins' bullpen did the rest. Strickland wrapped up his outing with a perfect fifth, Chris Grothues followed with two strikeouts in a scoreless sixth, and Jake Swenson slammed the door in the seventh by striking out the side to secure the run-rule win.
ย
UCLA returns to Big Ten play this weekend, hosting Michigan for a three-game series at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The opener is set for Friday, March 13 at 6 p.m. PT, with live coverage on B1G+.
