No. 1 UCLA Prevails in 14-inning Thriller at Rutgers, 4-1
April 10, 2026 | Baseball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. โ No.ย 1 UCLA outlasted Rutgers, 4-1, in a 14-inning thriller Friday night at Bainton Field. Logan Reddemann matched the program record with 18 strikeouts, anchoring a Bruins pitching staff that piled up 30 punchouts, just one shy of the NCAA all-time single-game record.
ย
Cashel Dugger chopped a ball to third in the 14th, and Payton Brennan raced home to beat the throw and break the deadlock. Aidan Espinoza then delivered the knockout blow in his pinch-hit chance, lacing a single through the right side to drive in two more.
ย
Easton Hawk shut the door in the bottom half, retiring the side in order to secure his sixth save of the season.
ย
The Bruins (31-2, 16-0 Big Ten) push their winning streak to 25 games and remain perfect in conference play.
ย
Reddemann authored one of the most dominant outings in UCLA history, matching the program record with 18 strikeouts over eight overpowering innings. The right-hander allowed just two hits and one run, punctuating his night by fanning 11 of the final 12 batters he faced. His 18 punchouts tie Rob Henkel's mark set in 2000.
ย
Dean West paced the offense with a three-hit performance as part of UCLA's 11-hit night, while Will Gasparino and Brennan added multi-hit efforts. Brennan drove in a run on a hit-by-pitch and later scored the go-ahead run, factoring into two of the Bruins' four runs.
ย
Zach Strickland (4-1) kept the momentum rolling on the mound, taking over in the 10th and firing four scoreless innings with seven strikeouts while allowing just two hits. Cal Randall added two strikeouts in a clean ninth to help set the stage for the extra-inning win.
ย
The Scarlet Knights capitalized on a leadoff double to take the lead in the bottom of the first.
ย
UCLA pulled even in the third, cashing in after three hit-by-pitches and a walk forced home a run. Brennan picked up the RBI after being plunked with the bases loaded.
ย
Pitching took over for the next 10 innings, as neither side could generate much offensively. UCLA went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position after the third, and hit into three double plays that halted any momentum.
ย
The Bruins finally broke through in the 14th with a pair of timely base hits to seize the lead.
ย
The Bruins return to Bainton Field tomorrow at 12 p.m. PT for game two of the series. Live coverage will be available on B1G+.
